What type of alcohol do you put in egg nog?
I've never actually made the stuff before and I'm supposed to provided it this year. I was about to go buy all the makings when I realized I have no clue as to what to spike it with. Is it brandy or bourbon or what?

2. It varies...a lot
Here are some interesting recipes. Maybe one of the liquors/liqueurs will appeal to you:

Personally, the one with Kahlua sounds pretty yummy! :9

8. I'm going to try a Coffee Liqueur
I have a couple bottles of el-cheapo Blue Mountain coffee liqueur. They should work well.

For non-alcohol, someone told me that eggnog and ginger ale is a good mix. Or "Vernors" if you're from the Michigan area.

I've seen recipes with bourbon and brandy (or cognac), and some with just brandy too.

Have a lovely time!

10. Do you know anything about bourbons?
I don't and don't know what would be a good one for this. I think I may make two batches just in case one of them ends up undrinkable.

I'm now wondering why I didn't insist I simply bake something. That I know how to do. :D

12. Very brave of you
to take on new challenges!

I don't think you have to get too fancy, but at the same time, you're not going to use the whole bottle, and so you're going to want to be able to use what's left over for other things. Maybe Maker's Mark--kind of mid-range, not super-fancy.

(But I haven't tended bar for about 3 years now, and there may be others with good ideas!)

7. bourbon and rum...
My family's recipe that pre-dated salmonella, and it called for raw egg yolks for the nog and whipped raw egg whites to float on top. We updated it for our less innocent times with my dad (a doctor) and my sister in law (a bio-chemist/cheesemaker). The recipe dates at least back to my grandparents in the 30s, but may well be older than that. Healthy and good for you!

Eeyore's Family Eggnog Recipe

1 dozen eggs
3 cups sugar
2 quarts milk
1 cup bourbon
3 cups light rum
1 teaspoon salt
1 pint heavy cream
12 egg whites' worth of pasteurized powdered egg whites (look in the grocery baking section)

1. Separate the eggs.

2. Cream the yolks with the sugar, then mix in the milk.

3. Heat mixture to between 140 and 144 degrees (use a probe thermometer) and hold temperature there for 3.5 minutes, then place hot mixture in the refrigerator until cold. Once the mixture is cool, proceed with next step.

4. Add the bourbon, the light rum, and the salt. Mix well.

5. In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream, then add to the mixture.

6. Reconstitute the powdered egg whites according to package instructions, then beat until stiff and fold into the eggnog.

16. Usually I use brandy.
Made some with rum last week and decided I prefer the 'bite' that brandy gives it. I don't care for 'sweet' drinks but the bottom line is personal choice. Whatever you decide, I'm sure it'll be delicious.

19. My parents would put Crown (bleh)
I don't know what I want to try this year. Per Wikipedia I could try rum or brandy. I think I'll go with the brandy to make it more "fancy."

20. Just use Vodka. It's cheaper. Why waste good booze if you're
going to clutter up the taste with all that sugar'n stuff?

24. I tried Spiced Rum + Brandy
Yum! 1/2 shot of each.

Captain Morgan's and Korbel's Brandy.

I tried Kahlua and baileys and it was ok, but the brandy was nice with the nutmeg. I suppose bourbon would be nice too, if you like bourbon.
