Xavier Cugat, the flamboyant orchestra leader who specialized in Latin American rhythms, is born in Barcelona, Spain. I mention this mainly because I've always loved Cugat's signature song, "Brazil," even before Terry Gilliam named his greatest film after it!
Also a New Year's baby was Slim Gaillard. Born in Santa Clara, Cuba, in 1916, Gaillard was a jazz-styled singer and guitarist whose best-known recording was "Flat Foot Floogie With The Floy Floy." He also created his own language, Vout, in which he often wrote songs. Offbeat listening, to say the least!

I'm especially interested in this Gaillard fellow? How was he received? Was he considered a madman or a genius or something in between? I'm always interested in unique people who create their lives in highly individual ways.
HAPPY NEW YEAR all you strong iconoclasts out there! The world needs you!
