Poll question: How late is "too late" for people to blast loud music in an apartment living situation? |
|
Edited on Sat Dec-23-06 10:26 PM by ncrainbowgrrl
I ask this as the recipient of the loud music/partying/bass being emitted from some apartment near me.
Keeping in mind that I have a migraine, and perhaps am being less than forgiving to the sounds of bass throbbing as I'm in a dark room trying to rest, I put this question to you, my fellow DUers... who may be a bit more fair and balanced than I can be at the moment

I go to bed at ten at the latest because I have to get up for work m-f. If you're blasting your music after this or making racket, I'm calling the concierge on you or I'm going to bang on your door and be less than nice. It's rude to your neighbors, and is one of my biggest pet peeves. Duckie

Ideally, eight or so, if any neighbors have young kids, and nine or so otherwise.
Edit: I used to manage an apartment building. Here's a better legal answer. You have a legal right to "quiet enjoyment" (that's the key phrase in the legal precedents on the matter) of your apartment at all times. Your neighbor never has the right to listen to music loudly enough to intrude on that. As a practical matter, the cops won't care until it's late most places, but your property manager should always be willing to deal with the issue before you ever have to call the law. Write a written complaint if it's not dealt with, a verbal one means nothing.

There's no reason, ever, and no appropriate time, ever, for anyone to play music loud enough for their neighbors to hear it, whether it's a house, apartment, car, or the shitwipe low-class fuckbag blasting hip-hop on his headphones on the bus.

I do think one should be somewhat forgiving on weekends. That's not to say they should be free to blast music all night, but I think midnight is a reasonable time for them to stop.

43. No. One should not leave it to others to be "forgiving" about one's assholery. |
|
One should just not be an asshole. And playing your music loud enough that a neighbor can hear it is the height of assholery.
And midnight is ridiculously late for being such an asshole.
But then, an asshole, of course, doesn't care about his/her neighbors, and so midnight will seem very reasonable, if not early, to an asshole.

21. I have mixed feelings on this |
|
Where I live all the neighbors are quiet as mice except for an occasional live band on weekends at a place nearby which is a good thing because they'd cater to young people having a place to go party and be safe.
So I like the peace and quiet, but on the other hand I have a stereo I pretty much never play anymore, or if I want moderate volume I'll turn it up a bit on a weekend afternoon and then usually not for more than an hour at the most, and usually less than once a month, lately!
It would be nice if people who liked to party it up and had tolerance of each other's noise could live in the same complex and people who liked a peaceful existence could live together in a different area.
In a perfect world!
I think, though, if it's a weekend, and they're not noisy all the time, some flexibility and tolerance is in order but of course that depends on how loud you're talking about.

However, I've always found building/property managers more than willing to tell the offending party to keep it down, and if it happens again, that I should keep on reporting them. It's worked the vast majority of the time.
But definitely the lease is a good first start.

When people are living so close together, everyone has an obligation to consider how their actions might affect those around them. There are people who work shifts, who might be resting, might be trying to concentrate, whatever. Shoving your your music or television down the throats of others in inexcusable. I had a test before headphones became common: I'd turn my music on at what I thought was a moderate volume. Then I'd go into another room and close the door. If I could hear the music in there, then I assumed the music would also penetrate the walls. Of course now I use headphones.
Right now, I'm in a noisy situation.. I moved into this flat over the summer. After the last place it was peaceful. The come Oktober, the upstairs neighbour went apeshit. All evening; all night. Full volume and bass. I was going to work sleep deprived and stressed out. Also, making unnecessary mistakes. The polite diplomatic mode of getting the to quiet down isn't working, so I'm about to go militant and bang on their door, delivering harsh words. And if they cause me to lose my job, they'll rue the day music was ever invented.

The OP was really asking "what are acceptable hours for rude behavior?" There are no acceptable hours for blasting music to unwilling neighbors.
Those of you who do it, please stop as of today. I know you think your music is the best thing since sliced bread, but it is extremely rude to force it on others. Even people who share your tastes in music can't enjoy it when it's coming through walls. It only sounds good to YOU, and is a nuisance to others.

I have it written in the lease agreement to where tenants are entiled to quiet enjoyment at all times (cannot annoy, disturb, incovenience or intefere with the quiet enjoyment of other tenants or nearby residents).
During daytime hours, I have tenants who work from home, work the graveyard shift (they sleep during the day), tenants who put their babies to sleep and tenants who just want peace & quiet.
For me, there is no "acceptable hour" for this kind of behavior.

55. Can someone please explain the need for music so loud it disturbs the neighbors anyway? |
|
Look, I love going to clubs and dancing, but the best parties I've attended had good music played at a level friendly to conversation, yet at a sufficient volume to allow dancing as well.
I don't understood the need for loud music outside a club or concert hall (for that matter, inside one as well--I just excuse that because it is a zone designed for such a purpose). I'm willing to drive to a place that is zoned to allow festivities without keeping the next-door overworked new mom frazzled.
I like to go to clubs, love to dance, but I go into zones that allow that--so why subject the neighbors to that horrendous low bass (a particular peeve since I can't even hear the melody with it) or Fitty-Cent or Toby Keith or (your particular pet peeve here)?
It's truly something I've never understood. I grew up loving X, Siouxsie and the Banshees, PIL, the Pretenders, etc, so I'm no stranger to the joys of good loud music, but it has a place--and my bedroom at 2 AM isn't it.
Is there any rational explanation for this phenomenon? My parents threw plenty of parties in the sixties and I don't remember them playing the music so loud one couldn't converse. OTOH, I know it isn't anywhere near a recent phenomenon, so,?
