I just adore this photo of a Siberian Husky, from an old Ralph Lauren paint color chart.

1. We had a red siberian husky/malamute mix. He didn't have blue
eyes. He was a wonderful dog. He, at one time, weighed 120 lbs, but when he got sick, he was almost 100 when he passed away.

They are fabulous with children. They talk to you. Our dog had obedience training because of his size, and everyone loved this dog.

I want another.

Thanks for posting this beautiful animal.

2. You're entirely welcome. I've only had small dogs (Boston Terriers, Cocker Spaniels).
Now, we travel too much of the time to own a dog.

My sister-in-law has a black and white Siberian Husky. Regrettably, the dog must have been mishandled as a puppy and avoids people completely. He might come up to sniff a hand, but then runs away to hide somewhere in their house. He barks, but doesn't growl or bite. However, they can never board him at a kennel because of those traits.

He is a beautiful animal, but I wouldn't put up with his nuttiness.

4. My next dog WILL be another Golden
Edited on Mon Dec-25-06 08:59 PM by dropkickpa

And my old dogs below

Amos 16 years old (had since he was a pup)

Molly 15 years old (rescued @ age 5)

Both unfortunately had to be euthanised about 6 months after the photos, one due to cancer (Amos) and the other due to SEVERE hip dysplasia (Molly).

Don't get me wrong, I love the dog I have now (5 year-old black lab rescue), but, she's just not a golden.

8. I'm partial to the red-heads myself
But really, the biggest thing for me is that they come from a predominantly hunting/working (be it as therapy, search & rescue, agility, water competition, etc) line, rather than the all show lines. The show lines (in my experience) tend to be more skittish and I just love the "git r done" attitude of the working guys. My boy was from a hunting line, the BEST dog ever, some of my friends still tell me all the time "I miss Amos!!"

I hope it's not copyrighted, but I'm not using it for any other purposes.

Interested in vintage electronic equipment and pictures that used to be on Usenet? Old radios?

Here's where I went...

There she is, among the radios -- with her tube style vintage connection -- and look at those earphones! Funny thing is: I'm going to get my permed hair on Wednesday. Hope mine won't be as frizzy as hers is, but still, she looks cute!

35. We had a Zenith that came from Heathkit stores.
I can't remember the model, but hubby bought it assembled. I think that was in 1981, but I'm not sure -- it could have been earlier.

It had two floppy disks... and we thought it was "blazing fast"!!!!!

Yes...

There was a Newf on a street where I used to live...not only kept "his" kids out of the street, but would get between the street and neighbor's escaped toddlers too.
Had a bark you couldn't miss either...just a single ROWF!

16. That's one of the best things about a Newfie.
My old girl Blossom was the same way. She would stand between me and anything that she saw as a threat to me until she was satisfied that everything was ok. I always felt safe with her (140 pounds) around!

31. Before you get one, do a little background research into laws in
your state regarding wolf hybrids. Particularly rabies vaccines. I had to fight to get a rabies vaccine for my wolf hybrid when he was alive, because I couldn't get a dog license without one. So, if you do get one, you may want to say: "To the best of my knowledge, he/she is a 'insert dog breed here' mix." Don't mention the 'w' word.

Also, be prepared for the most independent dog you have ever known - sort of like a canine sized cat. And, personality x 10. More-so than any dog. I've had more than one wolf hybrid and a lot of dogs, and yes, there is a difference. Any time I have ever heard of anyone who had a problem with a wolf hybrid, the animal was an only dog. I'm not saying that if you get a wolf hybrid, it can't be an only dog. I'm just saying anyone I, personally, have spoken to who was less than pleased with a wolf hybrid, had just one dog.

I have always had 4 or 5 dogs at any given time and brought hybrids in as pups - six weeks or under. They were part of a pack (natural to a wolf), and socialized as dogs. Kenzie learned to bark. Diablo never did. God help him, he tried. It would start out as a bark and finish as a howl. He never did get the hang of it. Both were gentle loving animals that never caused a problem. Well, Diablo had this little quirk... EVERY time I left the house, I had to cup his head in my hands, make him look me in the eye and tell him "Diablo, you CANNOT go potty in the house!" As long as I did that, no accidents. If I didn't, guaranteed mess when I got home. So, if there was an accident, it was my fault because I did not specifically tell him he couldn't. (The fact that he KNEW he wasn't supposed to - I mean, there was even an accompanying look.) Wasn't his only quirk either.

So, before you get your wolf hybrid, look into it. Talk to your vet about laws regulating vaccines etc. Talk to people who have wolf hybrids and are happy with them. Find out if they have multiple dogs, what types of idiosyncrasies/challenges which may arise.

Personally, I like large lumbering mutts. If they happen to have wolf in them, that's not a bad thing, it just means you have to be prepared to put up with challenges that do not accompany a domesticated dog. Sometimes those challenges are due to the animal them-self, and sometimes they're imposed by societal restrictions in an attempt to discourage wolf hybrids.

Whatever you decide, best of luck with your pup.

14. built to be the family dog
i actually hate to see a dog like a husky as a family pet. unless the family is athletic enough to give them the kind of activity they need. and they live somewhere cold. any kind of working dog ought to at least have something that resembles what they were bred for.
but boxers? bred to play with your kids, and sleep on your couch. seriously, anyone with a boxer and kids will tell you- the dog thought it was the nanny.

39. the one we had wouldn't let
my dad spank me. even though he adored my dad. very protective, but at the same time, always friendly to guests. they just read your body language, and act accordingly.
i am on my third. the last one was a white one that everyone swore was deaf, but that often listened to me. it never seemed to bother her. neither did at least 3 years with spondylitis, which is extremely painful. lived to be 13.
i think it is kinda sad that they are getting so popular. that is always followed by poor breeding.

44. Yes! They are the best! I have a 2 year old Boxer named Diva.
I have 5 very young children and we really researched dog breeds when it was time to choose a pet.

I could go on and on about how wonderful she is. Quiet, smart, loving, hilarious and absolutely perfect with "her" kids. She must be with her children at all times. I've never seen a more gentle and patient dog. She adjusts her level of play, depending on the age of the child. With my 10 year old, they will wrestle with a blanket. WIth my 3 year old, she will play tag, hide and seek and keep away.

She is kind to kittens and cats, friendly and jovial with other dogs but very protective of her family. And she is very sensitive and gets her feelings hurt if I am too harsh with her.

I adore her. The only downside was that she really took an awfully long time to potty-train.

33. I'm the proud parent of a purebred Siberian Husky
by the name of Panda Bear. She is now 7 years old, but we got her from a husky-only local breeder when she was 8 weeks old. As her name implies, she is black and white with gorgeous light blue eyes. She's incredibly smart and loving. She adores the company of other humans or dogs.

But the one thing that she loves above all is children. She is the most gentle of creatures around children and, upon sighting one, she will go belly-up.

She is a wonderful companion who loves to run, especially in the snow. She is also a true Houdini, which is why it's important to keep an eye on her at all times, otherwise she will find a way out of our fenced in and electrified yard.

She is a wonderful dog and we would most definitely consider another siberian husky in the future.
