15. Very sad. I loved James Brown. I liked him as a person, too.
Edited on Mon Dec-25-06 06:33 AM by ForrestGump
I know he had his weaknesses, to say the least, and his negative side, but all I can say is that I liked him. I met him -- spent several hours in his company -- and he treated me very nicely when he had no real reason to in that I was not some famous dude (I met him because a family member worked with him). This was maybe 1990 or so, backstage at the American Music Awards and at a private thing after.

We talked about where I was from, where he was from, music, and -- naturally -- about his friend, Elvis. We got on very well and talked like old friends, remarkable to some extent given that back then talking with such famous people was still pretty new to me. He made me feel at ease, despite his stature (not physical...the dude was short) and his bodyguards and the other celebrities there, some of whom were fawning over him. He had something of a distinct presence about him even in a more relaxed, non-public setting...it's James Brown, ladies and gentlemen, the Godfather, the Hardest Working Man In Show Business. I wish I had the pictures taken that night here with me now. In one of the black-and-white shots taken by a pro photographer, in which we're posing with some other people, we've still got our heads turned toward each other because we wouldn't stop nattering on with each other.

He was a great performer. One of the very best ever. He was all of that but, no matter what less-than-stellar acts he committed, I think he was also essentially a good man. I liked him, anyway, and nothing will take that away.

I love you, JB. Rest in peace.

EDIT: actually, I met him in 1992 (January 27, 1992, to be exact). He was still a consummate showman in his later years..check out this clip from June, 1991, for one:

16. Oh my, I was just thinking about his legacy the other day.
My kid has been listening to Radio Disney, and I was telling him about the James Brown song "I Feel Good" and how I remember when that song was first released. And how his songs were typically upbeat and inspirational.

James Brown was a part of my childhood. May he rest in peace.

20. NPR played "I Feel Good .." this morning. Maybe not the best eulogy.
RIP James. I sat next to James Brown in first class on a flight from Atlanta to Houston in 1981. Cool dude, that James.
