My nephew Joe is joining the Army
and leaves on Jan 10. He wants to go to medical school and is going in as a medic. Does anyone have any experience with attending medical school after being in the army? I worry about his becoming a medic but hope that he ends up in Germnay rather than Afghanistan or Iraq. He is the second kid in his family to join the military. His older sister is in the Marines and gets out at the end of 2007.

I worry about him.

1. Really rough climb from medic to doctor
He's going to be more like an EMT or Paramedic. Going from there to medical school and then a residency is gonna be really rough. I'd say, that for every one hundred who join to become a medic with an eventual goal of medical school, maybe 3-6 actually make it there and only 1-2 actually graduate.

However, all sorts of fire departments and ambulance companies are going to be looking to hire and underpay him like crazy.

4. He's got a bachelor's degree already and
would probably have no problem getting into medical school. What he lacks are the funds to pay for it.

7. ...and don't join the Army. Go Air Force. Much less chance of being shot at.
He needs to get commissioned.
