Mrs R outdid herself tonight. Delayed Christmas dinner so we could have the neighbors over: |
|
Rotisserie Prime Rib. Roast chicken. Steamed fresh green beans. Julia Child's 40-cloves-of-garlic mashed potatoes. Whole-wheat dinner rolls.
And of course, ambrosial gravy; the kind you want to just treat as a beverage.
Eight adults eating, and dead silence at the table for 20 minutes. Everybody was too overwhelmed to speak.
And, of course, the peachitudinous Mrs R skimmed off the choice crispy bits from the outside of the prime rib and slipped them to me.
I don't mind if I die now, because I've been to heaven. Yowsah!

1. YOWZAH! We did prime rib yesterday |
|
but it sounds like Mrs. R outdid my brother and I in the kitchen. If the rolls were home-made, try to get the recipe and share it!

10. Mrs R doesn't have recipes. She's a natural cook. Hey, the neighbors were coming |

over, including the young recently-married couple just back from Wisconsin for a visit, so we had to pull out all the stops.
Food that good MUST be shared, is our philosphy. It doesn't taste as good unless it's shared.

and mild...it's a ton of work but worth it.
(The recipe is in Julia's first book.)

and I can not sit back, it hurts that much. And after about two or three hours of suffering, I then make people have to leave the room. I made my upstairs neighbor stop moving around and come down to ask what that noise was one night after to much garlic.

16. With a bit of luck, m'dear. Our house is off the market for the winter, and we'll try again |
|
in the spring. If the Three Gables in Lancaster has been sold by then, well, we'll look for a different house.
But I'm going home, no matter what.

21. I absolutely NEVER met a Prime rib I liked until I had hers, because when you see them |
|
in a restaurant or (God help you) at a wedding reception, they're always gargantuan raw, tepid slabs of beef surrounded by a two-inch layer of blubber. Blech.
Gravy? Recipe? She doesn't use recipes. She's a natural cook. You'll just have to come over and watch her perform her magic.

25. I looked up the garlic mashed potatoes....... |
|
and found this thread; which has the same amount applied to a whole chicken. Now I'm inspired to try this. http://meems.imeem.com/-YEHNR7s/forums/m5z4rfzQ/eRw13oEs/chicken_and_40_cloves_of_garlic/THEN had an "aha!"moment when I realized I had the very cookbook you were discussing on the shelf!
