Question to all DU'ers who wear glasses.
Edited on Wed Dec-27-06 10:52 AM by edbermac
Do you have anything special put on the lenses? I get the plastic lenses and have anti-scratch coating put on them. Last time I had an anti-reflective coating put on as well, but that started to wear off after a while and left streaks on the lens.

Just going to get new lenses after my recent exam and am wondering what is necessary to get and what would be considered an unneeded expense.

Anti-scratch, anti-reflective, UV coating...anyone? B-)

1. I get it all.
I never had the streaks when the anti-reflective wore off, but maybe I replaced them before they got to that point. I have had the same pair for just over 2 years now.

2. Skip anti-scratch
I've found the anti-scratch to be worthless. Just an extra charge. Anti-reflective coating is good to diminish the ash tray look. When I first started getting it, it would flake off after about a year. Now they seem to make it better, lasting several years.

3. anti-scratch, UV, and I have those special ultra-thin lenses...
...otherwise my right one would be 1/2 and inch thick and they'd be lop-sided.

4. UV coating...
My sweetie has that and although my eyes got sunburned... She did not.

I had sunglasses on, but, they didn't have UV, apparently.
She had her regular clear glasses on and didn't suffer.

5. anti-scratch doesn't work
don't know about the other stuff, I never get it.

the lenses cost me more than enough (tri-focals with some special focal prism thingy) - as for frames, whatever is on sale

9. I had the laser surgery a few years ago -- worth every penny!
I had worn glasses since I was a child, and traditionally I got "the works" -- anything to keep them in good repair. Of course, even with "plastic" lenses they were still "coke bottle bottoms"!

The final kick in the pants that sent me to surgery was one morning when I "reached" for my glasses, and knocked them off the nightstand; I was so "blind" without them that I couldn't SEE to find them!!! Of course, I already knew that I wouldn't be able to operate a car without them -- I was lucky to be able to see my hand in front of my face without them -- and that was the final "I *really* am BLIND without my glasses" thing that sent me to the surgeon. Fortunately the technology had gotten good enough that I no longer require glasses at all (I'm now at 20/15), and although it took about six months to quit reaching for my glasses every morning, the whole "being able to see my toes in the shower thing" is way cool.

I have been told that I'll probably have to use reading glasses still when I get to be older, but ten to fifteen years of freedom is totally worth it to me!

Best, Ida
