19. Cash is considered way cool
There was a time that it became mandatory for any would-be poser indie rock pusher to be found with at least one Johnny Cash CD in his collection. So, yeah he is cool.

22. I love John Denver!
My mom was a big fan, and it always makes me remember my Young Life days in high school. We used to sing his songs-especially "Country Roads". We also went to camp in Colorado, and sang "Rocky Mountain High" a lot while there.

Edited on Fri Aug-01-03 12:27 AM by MrsGrumpy
such pure tenor, and the songs made my heart ache. I've worn out several "An evening with John Denver tapes". So sad we had to lose him so young.

10. John Denver's last song
Oh God! I'm an Ocean Buoy

Took a flight from Monterey
And I never came back
Bought a plane from a kit
That was built by a quack
Jumped in the cockpit
And downed a six pack

And now I'm an ocean buoy

Well, it's hard when you're flyin'
And your sluggin' on a bottle
Flying in a plane
That's an experimental model
Reached for Jim Beam
But instead I grabbed the throttle

Oh God! I'm an ocean buoy

Well, I grabbed the controls
And I started to fiddle
Got flames coming up
On my face like a griddle
Air flight's nothin'
But a funny funny riddle

Oh God! I'm an ocean buoy

Well, my head's chopped to pieces
And my body's full of dents
They identified me
By my guitar's finger prints
I tried to dry out
But instead got a rinse

And now I'm an ocean buoy

Well I'm feeling kinda down
And I'm sinking kinda low
In the undersea world
Of Jacques Cousteau
Bobbing up and down
When the trade winds blow

'Cause now I'm an ocean buoy

Well, I grabbed the controls
And I started to fiddle
Got flames coming up
On my face like a griddle
Air flights nothing
But a funny funny riddle

Oh God! I'm an ocean buoy. Woohoo!

When the plane dove down
It was nothing but a riddle
My pants got wet
When I started to piddle
George Burns appeared beside me
And we prayed just a little

Woo! Oh God! I'm an ocean buoy

I really enjoyed John Dever. Still do.

He wrote about things that matter. Not that many people do anymore. It's mostly marketing.

I don't know where the bit about the booze comes from, though, because the plane crashed due to lack of fuel.

30. I voted for John Denver
Don't love any of these, but John is the best.

I think Abba and some others here would only be uncool in in a real snob group. Abba were masters at pop songcraft, and are terrific IMO.

Some other "uncool" ones I love: Avril Lavigne, Michelle Branch, Vanessa Carlton, Shania Twain, Kylie Minogue, Gavin DeGraw, new Mandy Moore, Stella Soleil, Lillix, Phil Collins... I will also say that they can appeal to any age group, as I just want lyrics to be well written - I don't have to relate.

38. One more thing
I think Darryl Worley is talented except for his ignorant political song "Have You Fogotten?" The co-writer of that song, Wynn Varble, also happens to be a very good writer - but like Darryl, she obviously has no political insight.

39. I think the problem with threads that discuss "cool" and "talent"...
...is that the subject is so completely subjective it is almost flame bait.

After all, how does one measure "cool" and "talent"?

43. There were some threads earlier about the Rolling Stones...
... a band I not only find uncool, but no better than a beginning garage band, but I won't dedicate entire threads to showcase my musical taste.

I think the traditional definition of "cool" as in, what is "in" pretty much discounts most of the bands heralded in the lounge - and make some of the ones on the list above definitely cool.

45. "Cool" RE music is:
Performers who are very avante garde in performance style or dress, groups with "real musical chops" or "street cred", "college-radio" acts, people who are hipper than hip.

Uncool is: really "square" performers, mainstream country/western, prefab or corporate acts, lounge acts, or performers who resemble them, glitzy, cheesy histrionic acts, etc.

I don't believe in these distinctions, and I think many people are far too snobbish about music.

For example, those who would deride the "boy bands" as bubblegum, prefab, no-talent, etc, are incorrect in comparing them to a band like say, Rush. Of course Rush has a great deal more musical talent, but NSync is a carefully-designed, and well-produced and packaged product. They have excellent producers, songwriters and musicians backing them up, and work very long and hard at perfecting their dance moves, and getting their average voices to sound their best. Why should these kids be put down for that? I'd do it in a minute if I was young and pretty and had the chance.

It's fine to say that "boy bands" are not your cup of tea, but I hate hearing them being called no-talent fags or whatever. I'm not entirely sure that I would be able to do all that they do.

Out of these, I liked Celine Dion. She's got a terrific voice, and I like her updating of the Streisand glitz and self-importance. She's cheezy but I like it.
