Can I record my VHS tapes to DVD? |
|
I just bought a DVD recorder, and intend to use it like any VCR. But I'm wondering if I can connect it to my VCR and finally convert my old movies into DVD. It won't have the DVD menus, and the quality will be no better than tape, but at least I won't have to fill a whole drawer for a couple dozen movies.
Sound feasible?

2. Not usually. They have protections. |
|
But there is something called a DVD Xpress that will get past the protections and allow you to make DVDs from old tapes. It even has a program that will allow you to put on menus.

I am thinking of doing the same thing, plus I would think that you could record movies from cable onto a DVD. Below is a link to an example of the DVD/VCR combo. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7685793&type=product&productCategoryId=pcmcat83900050016&id=1134703757971">CLICK HERE

10. That is what i am talking about. |

I looked into it a lot. Maybe i am wrong and it was only my machine.
Only VHS tapes from CERTAIN production companies works on mine. The bigger companies films do not.

11. VHS is an analog medium, there's most likely no copy protection there. |

So it's probably your machine.
Newer DVDs have copy protection, but a lot don't.

I connected the red white and yellow line out on the VCR to the line 1 in on the DVD. I switch the input on the DVD recorder to line 1 instead of the cable (there is a button on my remote) - pick the speed for recording (I have 6 to choose from and the book tells me how long each speed will record) - push play on the VCR and record on the DVD when it gets to the point on the tape I want to record.
So far all of my VHS tapes have been able to record onto DVD's. I have a lawyer friend who works with copywrite who told me that I can change format for my own personal use so long as I do not sell the original VHS tapes.

8. Yes, just keep the old tapes around to keep it legal. |
|
It's not likely the FBI will go after you even if you sell or give away the tapes, but I suppose it could happen. (Maybe for political reasons???)
I put stuff on hard drives, where it takes up the least amount of room, and store the originals.
But for all the trouble that takes, it's sometimes easier to dig through the shop bins for deeply discounted DVD's to replace your tapes. Given a choice between making a DVD myself, or buying a higher quality DVD for $4.99, I'll buy the DVD.
