Going to SanFran tomorrow -- what should I do?
Would greatly appreciate suggestions. Especially non-tourist things that you wouldn't find in Frommers.

9. Times have been better
The economy of the whole matter settled it: FY2005, GGNRA spent approximately $90000 cleaning up after beach fires.

4. Go eat lunch at the House of NanKing
On Kearney, one block below Columbus. Tiny hole in wall chinese place, cheap and really delicious. Don't even look at menu. Just ask what's fresh that day and let them know what you generally like.

6. actually, a lot of the touristy things are really cool!
cable car rides

Maritime Museum near Pier 39 (I think it's 39)

Coit Tower (great WPA period murals) and then walk down the hill to North Beach - City Lights (great poetry room) and great coffee/gelato places. Plus the funky bar across the alley from City Lights (Vesuvio?) I didn't go in, since we had our son with us, but it looked really cool and all the Beats used to drink there.

Chinatown bakeries - great almond and other cookies

Ride the ferry - the view of the city is amazing, and it really looks like Italy, the way all the houses are stacked up on the hills.

I loved it. Have a great time!

The Exploratorium is there too, if you've got kids with you be sure to take them there.

Oh, and Lucky Creation in Chinatown has really great food.

16. The Exploratorium
and Golden Gate Park.

Oh! and on a lark, make sure to eat at a McDonald's at least once, just so you can say you went to one of the premier gourmet centers in the US and had fast food. :hi:

18. Astonishingly, out by Stonestown Mall, but within SF city limits
http://direct.where2getit.com/cwc/apps/w2gi.php?template=moreinfo1&client=oliveg&W2GI_QFIELD=BusinessID&W2GI_QVALUE=1295&domain=www.olivegarden.com

That's in the same general direction as Ocean Beach, so perhaps you can take your leftovers in a doggie bag and pyro out on them

If you wish your vacation to be Olive Garden-free (and who doesn't?), there really is only one (domestic) choice: Hawai'i. And yet we are still exposed to their noxious ads via national TV networks. :puke:

26. I've lived here 17 years and had never heard of it
Until my partner and I decided to take the 49-Mile Scenic Drive from start to finish one day, and he dragged me in there, suddenly remembering it from when he'd first come to the City. :)

I had the Fish 'N Chips. Very tasty.

19. Amoeba Records in the Haight --
1855 Haight Street, San Francisco. Huge record store. Also, the new Westfield Shopping Center on Market Street is worth seeing. A walk through North Beach, particularly on Grant Avenue between Broadway and Green Streets. And just sitting in a Columbus street cafe, nursing a cappuccino while the world walks by, or hanging in Washington Square Park, is really fun.

23.  Sam Wo's in Chinatown
You enter on the first floor and walk through the noisy exotic kitchen and go upstairs to the little dining room. The food comes up on a dumb waiter. And it's GREAT food.

27. I concur
Sad, Edsel Ford Wong is no longer with us, but I once had the honer of Edsel sitting down at my table to taste all the food while telling me it was very, very good. Edsel was famous for his insults and curmudgeonly attitude toward his customers, but I guess he to a liking to me.
