Chumming the Waters

----for S.P.

Sylvia, you can keep
your panther. I want a shark,
sleek and slippery, silent in the water
with rows of jagged dagger teeth, predatory
and powerful in his prehistoric appetites.

Let him smell my blood
rising hot, running cold
at the thought of him.
I’ll send my signal across
the ocean. I’ll be wanton, until
he feels me along his lateral line.
I’ll be something wild and floating, electric
and I’ll be consumed, my skin
not yet thick enough to withstand his bite.
