Where the heck do you buy a Playboy magazine these days?
Yeah, I want to read the articles.

When I was a kid in the '70s, you could pretty much buy Playboy anywhere -- the local independent grocery store, 7-Elevens, locally-owned bookstores.

As we all know, independent bookstores have become a thing of the past. There are no longer any local independent grocery stores in my area. Thanks to the puritanical Reagan years, 7-Elevens don't carry Playboys anymore.

The Waldens bookstore in my town doesn't carry Playboy. I suppose Barnes and Noble might carry them -- but those are 40 miles away.

They might sell Playboy at those adult/XXX shops, but Playboy is probably be too tame for them. What about liquor stores; they seem like a likely candidate, but I wouldn't know because I never go into them.

Does anybody know where a man can get a genuine Playboy magazine these days?

1. The, you know, the newspaper, ciggie, and magazine carts on the sidewalk.
What the hell are those things called? The kiosks?

5. Unfortunately, I don't live in a big city, where there are kiosks.

That sucks. In Philly they're everywhere. You can get Hustler there, too. You know, for the articles. *ahem*

4. Not where I live.
Much like beer and wine, such mags are sold in accordance with local law. I can't buy beer in a 7-11 in Maryland, but right across the Potomac I can.

17. You can get beer in a 7-11 in Montreal now?
I'm not saying I doubt you, I just never saw beer in a 7-11 up there. Then again, I can't really remember seeing a 7-11 up there at all, but I've only been back a few times since leaving town in 1979 (actually, I lived in Laval).

18. I was using '7-11' in the colloquial sense, as in, a convenience store or Dépanneur
Edited on Thu Dec-28-06 05:14 PM by GirlinContempt
I don't think I ever actually entered a 7-11 while residing in Montreal. I do go to one here every day though.

19. Understood, but
can you get beer in a Dépanneur? The extent of my beer drinking in Montreal over the last decade or so has been almost exclusively at hotel bars or Canadiens games.

deps have beer and some wine, usually by the bottle/can, not cases. It was highly amusing to me for about the first week after I moved there. I just had to keep buying beer because it was RIGHT THERE

22. And somehow Montreal still stands? Unbelievable!
Here in scenic Laurel, we're protected from evil such as beer and wine in convenience stores and grocery stores. If not for this quick thinking on the part of local government, it'd be a hazy shade of anarchy. :sarcasm:

24. Plenty of places in the States, but
I could have sworn that I saw beer sold in deps in Halifax last time I was there. I could be wrong, though, I didn't have much free time up there.

28. really?
I got a wild hair the other day and thought I might buy one...and I didn't see them. I'll have to ask. I've never bought a magazine like that (I've bought other kinds of nudie mags but not the kind specifically packaged for hetero men) so I thought I might just do it for the hell of it. I guess I can harass the clerks about it when I go in that store next. Maybe I'll think of a really disturbing story to tell them about why I'm buying it, like that my 8 year old son is home for Christmas break and needs something to read.

6. books-a-million carries a wide selection of mags
they also carry some fringe titles like earth first, high times, and other radical mags. Plus they don't look judgingly at you. I would rec that you pay cash, however because certain selection purchases are flagged. (a little birdie told me)

but like Barnes and Noble, that would be over a 40-mile drive one-way. Next time I go to Sac, I'll have to remember to pick up one, if I'm still wanting one.

12. i didn't see them till the 70s
I never saw a dirty mag till my sister got married and I'd go over to her house. Her hubby thought he was a real stud, so he had Playboy and Penthouse around. I'd read the interviews and I WAS fascinated. The naked ladies didn't do anything for me (I'm a girl who likes men) but the cartoons were funny and the interviews were positively radical.

33. Nah, I know you're kidding ...
but I don't want to get one every month.

It's just that I haven't seen a current Playboy issue since my immediate post-college years in the late '80s. I was wondering if they still had all the features like Playboy Advisor, Dear Playmate, the Q&A ... and the sharp photography (unlike the Penthouse, whose aesthetic was always soft, fuzzy shots) ... and I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to check out the les femmes au naturelles.

29. Adult shops might
It depends on the store of course. Barnes and Noble carries mainstream adult magazines.
There are some small chains and independent stores that carry mainstream adult magazines in my current area and where I grew up. I don't think that they are where you are though.

36. subscription is $1 an issue
i just got another postcard begging me pitifully to take them on again at that price

however i don't accept, they have to send me the comp (and have in the past) if they want to get one of my high and mighty zip code in their statistics in front of their advertisers

seriously if you like it, subscribe, it's cheap at the price

i think esquire has better articles, as in way better, but their nekkid girls aren't very nekkid (not that playboy is explicit enough to be whackbook material in my humble opinion but i'm told by some of my male friends that too much of a good thing is a gross-out and for them there is maxim, esquire, and playboy as opposed to well what i would consider real stroke books)
