'Malaguena', 'Conquistador' and 'Send in the Clowns' Best trumpet ever!
'Malaguena', 'Conquistador' and 'Send in the Clowns'

If you've ever wondered how a trumpet is *really* supposed to sound in the hands of a musician, check out Stan Kenton's cover of these three particular pieces of music.

My God! The man can hold a scream perfect and steady for 30 seconds and then change seamlessly to a vibrato technique that is simply beautiful!

Stan Kenton is hands down the best musician I've *ever* heard... regardless of the instrument, genre or style. If you dig a good horn, do yourself a favor and find these three tunes and give 'em a listen.

:wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow:

1. Kenton's the pianist/bandleader -- was that Maynard Ferguson on trumpet?
Maynard, who passed away in August, was the trumpeter's trumpeter.

If you're just hearing him for the first time, there's LOTS more out there!

3. Big, fat "Oops". You're right...
Big, fat "Oops". You're right-- Kenton was the bandleader and Ferguson played trumpet on the tracks. I got myself all excited hearing these three tunes for the first time.

These three pieces are new to me-- lots of other stuff I've heard, but these three pieces pretty much blew my socks off this morning...

4. MF did some incredible trumpet work for Kenton in the 50's, then ...

took off on his own. Most fans will tell you his most forgetable work was during the Disco era, but even his worst is pretty impressive. And his last CD, when he was in his 70's, is solid. Look for 'a Trumpet' and 'Maynard Ferguson' from the "This Modern World" and "City of Glass" albums by Kenton for some real squeakers. His "Live at Jimmy's" (1974? 5?)album will be reissued in Feb, something I've been waiting on for years -- it's never been reissued!!

You might also enjoy John Faddis and Arturo Sandoval. Arturo doesn't do as much high work, but he is a superb all-around trumpeter. He actually recorded Maynard's "Olé", which I don't believe anyone else has ever done. Also, look for any old recordings by Cat Anderson, an excellent trumpeter (w/Duke Ellington's band, only one solo album IIRC) who died way too young.

5. Thanks for the recommendations.
Thanks for the recommendations.

I've never given brass their due when it comes to jazz, having always focused on the reeds. But it seems this old man may have to do some reevaluations...

6. Stan Kenton was a great artist though. I am forever grateful to my Mom for dragging me to
see him and his band in concert at Chapman College in Orange, California in 1976. I didn't want to go, and I didn't enjoy it at the time, but now I appreciate his music a lot more and I'm glad I got to see him in person once.

7. No, no. no..."Send in the Clowns" on a trumpet?????
I really don't want to denegrate anyone's musical tastes. Really, I don't.

But we're talking Sondheim's song, right? From "A Little Night Music"??

I've heard some people cover this wonderful song...like Mel Torme. And God help me, Tom Jones....that was hideous beyond belief.

I'm not sure "Send in the Clowns" was meant to be jazzed up. But that's my opinion.

8. That's the one.
That's the one. Although I confess Sondheim's stuff as a guilty pleasure, this particular cover of the tune really is good. I think it's meant to be showcase for the trumpet solo. No vocals in it at all... just the band.

Tom Jones? Although I scrape the bottom of the musical barrel at times (The Bangles-- 'nuff said), I've never hit the sludge below the slime at the bottom of the barrel (read: Tom Jones)
