does anyone know anything about getting work on ocean crossing freight ships?
i'm trying to find more information about how to get a job on a big freight liner, one that say is going to europe or japan or something like that...but don't know where to look..

does anyone know anything about this? anyone done it?

1. I know you can pay to go on one, but probably need connections to actually get hired on.

Try the Lonely Planet website's forums - the Thorntree - I bet someone in one of those could help you.

2. Well you can try this....
Go to wikipedia and try and find a list of shipping freight companies. Then go to their websites via google or whatever search engine you use and visit their sites and apply online. Most allow you to do that. Other than that I really don't know what to tell you.

3. I've never done it, but try this:
Google European cruise lines. Find one (like Royal Caribbean Int'l), and google the company name and employment. Here's a link to get you going.

4. yeah thorntree consensus seems to be this is the better route
not too many freighters looking for amateur hour, but the cruise lines always need waiters, stewards, etc.

5. freighter don't register or hire American
when the ocean swallops up the odd ship, they like to do without much in the way of liability.
everyone i've met who has successfully worked abroad has done service industry stuff or ESL.
