|
Someone who I do not know well here at my workplace is leaving next week to work for a place that I know is a hellhole. Do I

1. One person's hellhole is sometimes another person's dream job... |
|
..that's been my experience, anyway.

And it is possible that she will be able to overlook the crappy stuff and gain some good experience there. Hey, what doesn't kill you...

She might love it there, don't poison her mind against it.

Your point about not poisoning her is right on the mark. Putting myself in her position, I would *hate* to have someone come up to me and say, "Hey, I know for a fact that XXX Company sucks. I am so sorry you are going there." Better to MYOB.

But then I read your other replies below. Sexual harassment is another ball of wax entirely. It's not subjective, it's just wrong. I think you might be obligated to warn her about that...

2. Ooo. If it's a done deal, well, I'd say NO. |
|
It's the kind of thing that, if you were buds and had this chat during the interview / job search stage, then, YES, but if she's actually on her way out the door, I'd not say anything. She'll find out on her own soon enough.

Once her new boss pats her on the ass, she'll figure it out right quick.
Disclaimer: Just because he has done this with his previous two underlings does not *necessarily* mean he will do it with her....

6. Yeah, the problem is... |
|
you say you don't know her that well, AND, she's already on her way out the door, (I am assuming quit her old job already) so there's nothing she can do about it. So at this stage, there's really nothing to be gained by warning her except annoying her and making her uncertain about her choice.
Besides, maybe she can deal with it. Any boss that pats me on the ass is going to get way more than he can handle, tout suite.

7. Is there anyone you know who currently works there? |
|
Someone to tell her about the boss? Look out for her around the boss? Help bring this guy down if anything happens?

12. Maybe, you should warn her then |

That sounds like a really bad situation.

8. You're right, of course |
|
If I had known about this when she was interviewing, that would have been the only good time to say something. Thanks.

13. Many thanks everyone! |

I have decided that I am going to approach this very carefully, but I am going to say something; something like, "Congratulations on the new job. I know that {this kind of publishing} is sort of rough-and-tumble, not like here, but I know you're up to it."
