1. My FIL. The day he was buried my husband was hospitalized

with congestive heart failure leading up to a quadruple bypass and a debrillator implantation.

Dinerral Shavers, 25, died from a gunshot to the back of his head at about 5:30 p.m. while behind the wheel of his black Chevrolet Malibu in the 2200 block of Dumaine Street, police said....

Although critically wounded, Shavers continued driving four blocks up Dumaine before stopping.

By 6 p.m., Shavers lay motionless on his back in the middle of the street just outside the open driver's side door as red and green holiday lights blinked rapidly on homes behind him, and a few patrons of the Magnolia Meat Market at the corner looked on....

Shavers was the snare drummer for the Hot 8 Brass Band and the music teacher at L.E. Rabouin High School, where he had recently begun the school's first-ever marching band. "I've got 80 kids marching -- we're making history at Rabouin," he said proudly in an interview earlier this week. The band was already booked for several Mardi Gras parades.

I gues I won't be seeing the Hot 8 next week or the following week after all. :cry: looks like the Soul Rebels for me.

But never mind about my entertainment lineup; it appears that Mr. Shavers would have been an unqualified asset to a city still struggling to preserve its unique culture, with approximately zero assistance from the repuke poweres-that-be. It isn't every day that a school down there gets its first-ever band!

Hit me hard, partly because of certain kinships I have with him. The disgusting behavior of certain DUers upon hearing the news, and the glimpses into their character failings that this more often than not provided, was almost as disturbing.

Age 57 of throat cancer complications, it's a shame and he was WAY too young. He played a considerable part in the race relations struggle of the 70s (co-created Good Times and had a character named after him; was also Lionel Jefferson in "All in the Family" and "The Jeffersons". Nobody else could play Lionel. Unfortunately, CBS tried to do that anyway... :( ) Any of his episodes and scripted commentary, the guy was sharp and suave in his approach.

29. My grandmother

She was 83. My grandfather, her husband, described that as a young death, but it is above average. She was not afraid to die nor especially dreaded it as she observed that many young people do. I feel bad though because she took care of my sister and I quite a bit. I also feel bad because she worked so hard taking care of her husband and felt that it was her duty, but he is now finally learning to take care of himself in old age. It just doesn't seem right. It is not that I wish bad things on my grandfather. I just wish that she had an equal right to her time and her leisure. She didn't seem resentful of it at all and was a truly self less person and fought for those and causes that she felt were right.
As for people who I don't know, I read about this girl http://www.christithomas.com/ and felt truly sad when I read about her life and death.
Of your list, Steve Irwin because he was fairly young, had a young family, and was in the midst of his work: wildlife conservation and bringing that to the public. Some of those others did do great things but had lived relatively full lives and should have had no regrets at their death.

33. I just returned from the funeral of a friend/co-worker

she and her son died Xmas day in a head-on auto collision, so I'm going with "Other".

at the moment, I'm not feeling positively affected. i'm glad to have known her but i'm feeling pretty broken up right now.
