After working through Christmas, I managed to wrangle the eve off (although I'm working the day.)

We're planning on a relaxing evening at home with my sister and her husband and maybe go see fireworks in a neighboring town.

Back in early September, I spent some time in the Holland/Macatawa area visiting with relatives. There were so many DeVos signs in people's yards (I saw exactly ONE for Granholm) that I really despaired. The other parts of Michigan did good re-electing Granholm.

He would have been a total disaster! I love Jennifer -- I wish she could run again or run for president, but she can't do either. Maybe she'll run for senate or something down the road or be named to the next Dem president's cabinet or as some agency head. I just hope she completes her term, which means she won't be available until 2010.

She's just so warm and honest and instills a great sense of trust when you meet her. She has a lot of the same qualities that Bill Clinton has when it comes to connecting with people.

Since we're going to the swearing in and the afternoon festivities on Monday, I'm going to have to set the VCR for the Rose Bowl, just in case. I originally wanted to be sure to be home in time for it, but it's not often that we get to attend something like this, so I'll just play it by ear. Maybe we'll just go somewhere near Lansing or E. Lansing to watch -- I'm sure it will be strange watching a UofM game in State territory if we do!

4) Watch the Bears kick the Packers be-hinds and bid Brett Favre a fond farewell from football (I think this will be his last game, my guess is he'll retire after this year.)

5) After the Bears game, I'll either watch the 3rd season of Arrested Development or Casablanca and enjoy a fine brew.

I was remembering Ruth Klein. My mother had sent me to help her as soon as I was old enough to be useful. Miss Klein made a crack house into a community garden and breathed life into neighborhood that had been slated for demolition.

It's startling, really, to consider that she passed away unnoticed - a situation I now find intolerable.

She made it look easy and as it turns out, it was. You just have to want to make a difference. Think global, act local and the advantage we have now is the medium in which we are communicating. It holds the power to revive her spirit.

Talk about happy new year ... we were talking about appreciating real estate values and networking application requiring her professional qualifications and I mentioned Sheepshead Bay and the police station that closed there. Who else would understand how that result came about? But Robin knew of her by reputation.

Talk about immortality! And we met bringing modern Internet service to FDNY, finishing this year. Our efforts in the public interest serve beyond our tenures.

I have my master's now. They tell me it was completed in record time, but I'm postponing the PhD for professional reasons. Honestly, it can wait.

But the big success tonight was finding someone who knew my dear friend. If anyone was a true god mother, Ruth Klein was there for us all.
