For everyone who is reeling from holidays with family: |
|
The following is about forgiveness, and I have to get it out and read it to myself from time to time. You can substitute father, brother, sister, etc. for mother.
Forgiveness does NOT mean:
that whatever your mother did was all right that you should spend more time with your mother, or that your relationship will necessarily improve that you should do what she wants you to do when it doesn't serve you, or sacrifice your own health or happiness for her. This just recreates the same pattern you are working to forgive; that you should allow your siblings or your father to tell you what you "owe" your mother.
Contrary to popular belief, forgiveness is a gift you give to yourself. It is not something you do for someone else. Holding a grudge, blaming your mother (or yourself) for the problems of your life is like taking poison and waiting for someone else to die.
Forgiveness is the peace that emerges when you take a hurt less personally and when you take responsibility for your feelings.
The above quotes are from the book Mother-Daughter Wisdom by Christiane Northrup, M.D.
