DU Moderators: Is there a proper "alert" protocol?
When I alert, how much explanation do you want? Do you want it short and sweet, or more detailed? Should we address you formally, ie, "Dearest Moderator; this idiot thinks Al Gore is the devil/God incarnate/a product of the Sony company. Could you kindly plant a granite marker where they once stood?"

Say, I alert on the third dupe of a Saddam article by a respected liberal writer (actually, I just did!). I always include the link to what I think is the original. Do you want further explanation beyond "dupe"?

I do TRY to refrain from the likes of "Can't this idjit dupe check?" or "Gad, 14,847 posts and NOW he reveals himself to be a troll because he voted for the Republican for dogcatcher? I knew it all along!!1 Sheesh!", etc. On the other hand, I know I've crossed the lines at times.

While I imagine there are different desired protocols for the Lounge and GD, there must be some standards you'd like us to follow--or maybe just get the job done?

Anyway, thanks for the efforts, regardless! :patriot:

1. I don't think they care much about dupes in GD.
Me, when I alert, sometimes I don't even say anything at all, just "Meh!" ... it depends on how offensive it is. If it's pretty blatant I don't think it needs much of an explanation.

Of course, I'm not a mod, so take that with a grain of salt. ;)

2. Well....
If you can accept a comment or two from a former mod...

You don't necessarily have to say "your royal majesties" when addressing them in an alert. But just being polite and friendly is the way to go, IMO. The mods do work hard...most especially times like this. I mean, there's been a death of a former President and Saddam's execution within days of each other. That's a tough workload.

I think including a link and offering a short explanation would be sufficient.

Again, this is from a former mod. I apologize to the current mods if I stepped in inappropriately.

3. as a former grey ghost too
i loved the smilies and waves on the emails

make it friendly and informative enough to let them know what bugs you about the thread/post but don't write them a book. a couple of sentences is usually plenty

PS :hi: terrya!

5. Hi, AzDemDist6!
I'm with you. I liked the smilies and waves on the alerts. And, boy, did I appreciate a simple "please and thank you".

Your advice is good. Make your points and objections known, but don't write a book about it. A couple of sentences will get the point across.

4. Also as a former mod...
I generally appreciated a sense of humor and lots of cutting-edge swearing. :patriot:

The really long-winded ones that attempted to tell the entire back history of why poster A was pretty sure poster B was a tool of the devil tended to bore me senseless.

6. A sense of humor is nice, also.
Agreed. :-)

If I were to alert on something and went on and on and on about it, I'm sure there would be some serious glazed over eyes in the mods forum. Short and sweet gets the right attention. Imo.

7. When you alert a thread
Does the mod see which thread automatically? Or MUST you add the link yourself?

18. I always keep it short and sweet.
This guy seems to be a troll based on a search of his name.

Inappropriate.

Hateful.

This is breaking DU rules.

I sense a possible troll. Just letting you know if you want to keep an eye on him.

After reading this thread, perhaps I have been a bit rude. I just keep it simple to avoid being long winded as I have a tendency to be. And, I also don't spell check, so ooops!

19. I generally only alert when something is obiously over the line.
So, I don't usually feel the need to give much explanation. I sometimes add if it was a low post count/no profile situation, or if they have other recent posts that are similar/relevant.

I never included any personal note, thinking short and to the point was best, but now that I know it's appreciated, I will do that:-)
