I would like some opinions on my new car.
Here it is: http://blogs.automotive.com/1000898/miscellaneous/2006-scion-xa-release-series-30-well-equipped-for-october/index.html

It's my first new car in many years and I was looking for a small car with good gas mileage, but also something that had a distinctive look. I like it and think it is a neat little car, but I just looked at it as a car. When I visited my 15 year old daughter at Christmas I took her to school when I first got there and she did not know I had a new car. The first thing that she said when she saw it was, "Chick car". I know that there are some cars which are overtly male or female cars, but I looked upon the Scion as just a car. I asked 2 women who I work with and they both agreed that it is a chick car. I wouldn't mind so much except that I am not a chick and I am interested in one of the women who said it looked like a chick car.

So is this a "chick car" and if so, what could I do to guy it up a little? I am happy with the car, but I wouldn't mind doing something to it to make it look less like a supposed chick car.

3. If it's any consolation
my husband drives a bright yellow '99 Beetle (with a black bra), and the daisy is still in the bud vase on the dash. Now that's a chick car!

5. Big tires? Naked lady mudflaps? Flames?
I wouldn't say it's girly, but it's not precisely oozing masculinity either. Maybe upgrade the exhaust and put racing tires on it? It'd kinda scream teenage ricer guy, but at least that's a step up from "chick car."

6. Chick car. Totally.
I don't think there's anything you can do "guy" it up, either. You might be able to make it look like a grandpa car with a few stickers for AARP and something about fishing with your grandchildren, but you ain't never gonna make that look like a guy car.

Maybe you could find a "soccer dad" sticker, but then women won't think that you're single. But they will think you're so cute.

Nice car, though. Good and solid, good mileage, should last a million miles or more, Good choice, from a logical perspective.

7. Table the labels!
C'mon, good man, don't fall for labels. Drive the car with pride knowing you chose wisely. Methinks your daughter could use a few lessons on non-labeling. I'm a label loather!!

8. I can disregard my daughter's opinion,
but it's the lady at work in whom I am interested that I would like to have think of my car as being less of a "chick car".

16. That goes for your lady at work too!!
I'm afraid, sir, that the same thing applies to the lady you're interested in. I would never guage a man by the sex of the car he drives (provided that it's clean both inside and out, polished, with few if any chips in the paint). If you even think that it's possible that she would judge you by what sex your car seems to suggest, then you must look upon her as being exceedingly superficial. I'd find another lady friend before I'd do anything to my car to make it look other than it is. You chose it. Be proud, my good man!

Yes, I have an opinion on just about everything :) :) Good luck at finding just the right person for just the right reasons.

11. I checked out the Scion forums and they laughed that it is a "chick car".
There are tons of mods that can be done. There are tinted windows, dark wheels, and it can be made into a lowrider. Lots of others, more than I would know where to start. Tinted windows are a good and simple start. I think I can guy it up a little.

24. Hey elocs, just do a wheel upgrade.
You don't need to go all crazy with bodypanels and stuff. The Xa has some pretty good lines to begin with, but some nice wheels and low-profile tires will trick it out perfectly. Maybe lower the suspension a tad, and there you go. I looked at those cars, but I went with a Suzuki fo the warranty. Enjoy your ride!

32. I am definitely looking towards some black wheels,
but want to wait until winter is over here in Wisconsin. I think I will first get the windows tinted, which will be simple and not expensive. On the Scion websites for modding they show a lot that have been converted into lowriders. I do like the lines on the car. It came with a Kenstyle body styling on it which cost a lot to buy. Now that I have looked on the Scion websites I can see there are many things I can do. I think I can just do a few mods that will not only make it look cooler, but also more like a guys car. The Stingray metallic blue color I have is interesting because it looks a different color depending upon the light. Sometimes it actually looks silver.

26. Put a chain steering wheel on it
Also put dingleballs around the headliner, have it slammed real low, put alloy wheels on it, some tiger skin on the dash...basically, break out your copy of Up in Smoke and make it look like Pedro dePacas' Love Machine. (Make sure to put the Amber Vistalite drumkit in the back seat and the huge joint in the ashtray. Or are ashtrays now sold as an upcharge item?)

"Chick car" doesn't come to mind when I see this car.

27. Eh, Your Daughter Just Wants To Drive It!
It looks like a cool car

I guess you could paint fire on it, or hang a chain from the mirror, or I don't know

I think it doesn't scream "chick", it screams I'm a liberal who cares about not using tons of gas and I drive a cool car!

your daughter just wants to drive it!

33. I am sure my daughter would love to drive it when she is old enough.
I think part of the problem when I posed the question as to whether it is a "chick car" is that I used that terminology, i.e., "chick car". My daughter is the only one who has used that term unsolicited. If I had asked, "What do you think of this car?", then the responses might have been different. It has been described to me as being "cute", but I have always considered "cute" to be one of the most overused words in the female vocabulary, used for nearly anything: cute guy, cute outfit, cute house, cute dog, cute car.

29. The only thing you can do to make it a "guy car"
would be to make it three times bigger and put a seven-litre engine in it.

Which would negate all of its virtues, so don't bother.

34. Tell the chick you're interested in
about how much money you are saving on gas with the chick car. And how many more place you can take her because of that. Then you can show the chick how much the chick car can carry and you can help her out when she has something that needs to be transported.

By the way, I'm a chick who drives the Honda version of your chick car--a Honda Fit. They're fabulous. And I, like you, will still be driving when all the guys and their guy cars have run out of gas.

35. It's no more a chick car than the cars it competes with.
Looks like a smaller version of the Matrix/Vibe, and akin to the Mazda3 hatchback and Rio5. It's like a 4-door Mini Cooper. I've also seen a lot of "chicks" doing the "guy up" things with their cars (exhaust, wheels, etc) so I fail to see the point.

Get some of those fake testicle things that hang from underneath the car. That'll do it.

Besides, wagons rule.

if you like the car - and you must, since you bought it - drive it proudly. To me, "chick car" has a good connotation; if it's a car a "chick" or woman would like, then a woman would like that you have one, and are comfortable enough in your masculinity to not worry about what others might think of your vehicle choice.
