Jesus Christ these new metals bands are fucking shit. What the fuck?!?!?!
Edited on Sat Dec-30-06 11:39 PM by Rabrrrrrr
Screaming through those goddamn voice boxes was interesting when one guy did it, but apparently now that's the only way to sing for a metal band, and it's goddamned boring and stupid now.

And remember when metal had riffs and tunes and rocked, with huge volume blasting through stacks with lots of sustain and distortion and feedback and actual musicianship by the players?

Now it's all choppy metal chords played through some super duper extra gargantuan fuzzbox with no sustain, no melody, and nothing of any interest, just a great big crunch that seems to sound the exact same no matter where the guitarist's hands are on the neck.

crunch (pause) crunch crunch (pause) (super distorted octave-shifted voice that is utterly non-understandable screaming away, and could be a recipe, or Satanic words, or a reading from the Brothers Karamazov) crunch (pause) crunch crunch (pause) crunch (pause) crunch crunch (pause) crunch.

Not to be confused, of course, with crunch (pause) crunch crunch (pause) crunch (super distorted octave-shifted voice that is utterly non-understandable screaming away, and could be a recipe, or Satanic words, or a reading from the Brothers Karamazov) crunch (pause) crunch crunch (pause) crunch (pause) crunch crunch (pause) crunch, which is clearly an entirely different song.

Or the other kind of metal now - the "we can play so fast" genre. Who fucking cares if you can play 32 notes a second? They all suck. It just means you suck faster than someone like, say, Slash. There's gotta be music first, you insufferable fuckbags. Listen to some fucking Black Sabbath you wanking jizzsuckers - that's what metal sounds like. All music is about restraint and artistry. For the sake of Christ himself, even Jascha Heifetz only played "Flight of the bumblebees" once a concert. You goddamn tits.

I mean, come on - Ratt and Poison and Guns & Roses and other hair shit bands sucked, but, for fucks' sake, at least it was musical and creative, even if only in the most basic and pop kind of ways.

And I especially love how these new metal bands get all tattooed and act like tough guys and think they're being so satanic and evil and oooooh scary and gosh look at us, we're sooooooooo metal and heavy.

Fuck that - Elvis Costello could out-metal any of these goddamn wannabes wankers. Richie Blackmore could kill them with three chords. Tony Iomi could do it in one.

Just cuz you play it through a satanic fuzzbox doesn't mean it's metal, you shiteating nancy boys.

Fuck off.

That's about as metal as I get though, so I'm otherwise useless in this discussion.

They all sound like Cookie Monster having a bad day. I'm supposed to take them seriously? Take your angry Muppet voices elsewhere, losers.

Opeth and Mastodon (at least, the early stuff for Mastodon) aren't bad either, despite all the complaints.

(Did I get the full complement of "r's" in there?)

OK, my friend, listen up. Grandma Moses here would like to have a word with you.

D'ya think maybe we could clean up the language a bit. Seems there's a generational gap which you as the young 'un here might want to close--at least a smidge--if you please.

Now I don't mind a resounding "Jesus Christ" or a well bellowed out "Christ Almighty" but all those "f" words really do rough up my sensibilities.

And don't be lippin' me back. Remember, this is grandma you're talking to.

Yours for language clean-up :)

8. Then either don't read it or put me on ignore.
Learn to deal with it - it's not my problem that you allow certain words to have power over you.

I swear, especially when I'm ranting over totally unimportant shit, like numetal. Or when I'm totally pissed over truly important stuff.

Most times I don't swear, or do it much.

But believe me, if you still hold to old-school bullshit paradigms that tell you to be afraid of certain words, then DU, and especially the Lounge, is not the place for you.

Quite honestly, I care about what you mind or don't mind about as much as I care what Billy Joel has to say, and then only so long as you mind it to yourself.

"Language clean up" my fucking ass. Christ. How pathetic.

33. What?!! Another poor dear? It must be the hour
Now isn't that interesting--insulting his parentage? How was I insulting his parentage? If he is proud of how his parents raised him, he couldn't possibly be insulted by any of my remarks cuz he would know that I was simply lacking sufficient information. An insult is only an insult if you find some truth in it.

All I know is that he has said nothing additional that would cause me to change what I said; namely, that I'm thankful I don't have to take responsibility for having raised him. C'mon, we all have to be thankful for small mercies. Besides, you guys seem to think that anything goes, so I'm accommodating you.

In the final analysis, however, you missed the point of my first post entirely--I can see the humour was far too subtle for either of you to get. Little wonder you didn't get the point either. See, with you guys, ya pretty much have to use a hammer for everything. But that, too, is okay given that you appear to be far too submerged in base culture to act any differently.

But, hey, if it's gotta be your style, then it's gotta be--and now, soldier, stand easy.

One hates to be rude to a new person - so let me first welcome you to DU. WElcome! :hi:

Now let me say to you to stop being so fucking rude, patronizing, and disdainful.

The tone of your post, your first one, was pure assholery. "Oooh, don't make my old ears feel bad". Fucking waaaaa waaaa waaaaa. Please - like no one in your generation, or a generation before, or before that, ever swore.

"Old sensitive ears" my fucking ass.

If you don't like to see or hear or read swearing, then just say so and be honest about it, and offer your feelings and be honest about them - but don't blame your sensitivity on some assholery like "I'm old", as though only young people swear and all old people are some kind of golden purity. That's just shitbrained illogical, untruthful, assholery.

Had you come in in a non-patronizing, non-obnoxious, non-untruthful way, I'd have been okay. Had you just said, "Rabrrrrrr, swearing makes me feel kind of anxious, sort of lost (or whatever you feel)" I'd have been more sensitive.

But instead you chose duplicity and lying and an attack mode to deliver your ex cathedra nincompoopery.

I am actually one of the least angry people you will ever come across.

And I'm glad you weren't responsible for raising me, either - I'd hate to think of a what self-loathing, condemnatory, fearful, scared-of-life lying sack of shit I would have become. I'm sure I'd be in therapy. Thankfully, I had good intelligent, emotionally mature, and self-aware role models in my life.

:puke:

You remind me of a person from a young country who goes to a centuries-old country and tells them why their government is fucked up and that it should change and that they're driving on the wrong side of the road and their food is crap. Or the guy who comes late to a team that has worked together for ages and tells them that they're doing everything wrong and that they need to change.

And I couldn't agree more.

ALL commercial music today sucks hard. I was watching some '70s soul/R&B show the other night and I almost wept when I saw how talented the artists were back then, and just how simply GOOD the music was. Billy Preston did not sound just like Isaac Hayes, and the Temptations didn't sound just like Earth, Wind and Fire. Every one of their songs did NOT all sound the same.

The same goes for metal. I was listening to the "Heavy Metal" movie soundtrack the other night. That is some good shit. None of these jerk-off "metal" bands today know how to play or sing a single note--let alone craft a song--and that's just damn pathetic.

39. There ARE artists like that and plenty of them
The problem is they can't break out of the basement. The biz decides what gets on the air, who gets signed and promoted... everything. They don't even LOOK for talent anymore since they found that it's far easier to find some cute young thing that can't sing or play a note and has zero stage presence and manufacture them into the next biggest thing... and they will suck no matter how much money they sink into every one of their creations because they're business people who have no fucking clue what is good and what isn't and don't care - they own the airwaves, so that's what you're going to get (tough shit for you).

Check out your local music scene. The REAL artists with REAL talent that can write, play, sing and perform the clothes right off the losers on your radio are still working day jobs and playing in your local bars for free beer and probably will be forever. It's a fucking SIN.

No metal fan likes every new metal song made. I listen to the metal channel on Sirius and I probably like about a third of what they play and I am a metal fan. Heavy metal is kind of like jazz in one respect. It requires the listener to work to really appreciate the music- to know what's really going on. I agree that some new metal lacks a sufficient amount of melody and that's one of the trends that I don't like. But I think that trend is on it's way out. Check out Bullet for My Valentine, Dragonforce, Trivium, and Killswitch Engage for some good new metal that I think is going in the right direction.

32. "Headbangers Ball" is a laugh riot these days
I just can't help myself. Every Saturday night, I tune in and see a bunch of dirty-looking, fat, bald headed guys alternately screaming or growling incoherently into a microphone, and I start giggling. They're trying sooooo goddamm hard to be sooooo fucking metal, and all they do is come across as some kind of joke. VH1 Classic usually runs Metal Mania at the same time, and clicking back and forth just drived home the fact that "metal" has devolved into shit even more than rap/hip hop has.

I guess that Metallica and Iron Maiden are now just that old shit that their parents listened to.

The thing is, metal is one of the strongest music scenes out there. There are literally hundreds of independent labels and artists, and it's not all MTV crap. Outside the United States, people actually still listen to it, and there are several multi-day festivals in Europe and South America that draw millions of fans.

If you listened to metal back in the glory days of the 1980's, you should really check out some of these bands, including:

Hammerfall
Gamma Ray
Blind Guardian
Rhapsody (now called Rhapsody of Fire)
Nightwish (killer gothic music with female vocals)
Paragon
Dream Evil
Candlemass
Therion
Savatage
U.D.O. (lead singer from Accept's solo stuff)

This list is geared heavily towards power metal and gothic metal, but it's a much better starting place than shit like Deicide or Slipknot.

I must add, however, that the new Trivium CD, The Crusade, is actually pretty good. It's very metallica-ish, and the singer has abandoned mallcore vocals and pulls off a fairly decent Hetfield impersonation.

36. I completely agree.
I haven't bought very many metal albums this year for that reason alone. It's a genre that has just become total horse**** lately.

60. More specifically, their Twisted Xmas CD
I saw them on the Late, Late Show and I wished I had had an ice pick for my ears.

50. The problem is too many At The Gates-ish metalcore bands fucking everything up.
I can't really contribute either way because I've been listening to metal since the early 80s (back when most of the good shit came from the UK). Most of the metal bands I've liked since jump come from the following genres - Thrash, Grindcore, Death, Doom, Stoner and Hardcore. Like a poster above said, majors RARELY, if at all, sign quality acts in this genre anymore. The noteable exceptions lately being Lamb of God and Mastodon, who they seem to want to build, many great artists are plagued with never being heard of in this know-someone-or-blow-someone industry.

One of the issues I have with a lot of the popular acts like KSE (whom I just think is BARELY a metal group), Between the Buried and Me, Chimaira, Every Time I Die, Norma Jean, Unearth, Etc, Etc, Etc, is that while there's talent there, these groups cannot write a song that holds more than a half hour of your memory. Their ability lies in guitar talent, but the catchy riffs are just not there.

Bands that make an effort into their songs are the most memorable. I don't know if this is any indication since most of the following acts have growly vocals, and I'm just flat out not a fan of Men-Of-Might power metal like Hammerfall, Edguy and Dragonforce (long on arpeggios and operatics, short on variety), but this is what I've been into for all of time:

High on Fire: Their older stuff is still heavier and more memorable than 99% of the stoner stuff that's out there now, if you're into Sabbath meets Venom. Too bad they went fast and are starting to become a morgue for bassists.

Slayer: Can't go wrong with them.

Melvins: Thousands, no, several THOUSANDs of bands owe their careers to these guys (one of them being Saint Nirvana). Heavier than metal and harder than hardcore, nearly every imporant non-pretentious genre originated with these sludge masters, who can still beat ass live.

Mastodon: Possibly the best 6-year-old band out there today. Talent all over (especially the drummer) with memorable songs, I've seen these guys play in front of 50 people. More singing's been thrown in the mix, but still a lot memorable.

Opeth: Ghost Reveries and Blackwater Park are examples of great song composition, meaningful soloing, a good balance of clean/growl vocals and a haunting feel taken straight outta the 70s.

Napalm Death: Lately, these guys are re-interesting me. HUGE fan of them in the 80s-90s, but their trimmed line-up is yielding some killer songs.

Gojira: France's best metal import, these guys are going to blow up huge. They got the riffs, the songs and the stage presence. No clean vocals, though, sorry.

Jesu: Ambient low-end heaviness from the great Justin Broadrick. One of those bands you stick the headphones on and just drift.

Sunn o)))): Not for everyone. More or less the musical version of Harry Potter's Dementors: they vacuum all happiness out of life and replace it with jet-engine decibel levels of drone and Kilohertz. Need to be seen live, it's better that way.

Pearls and Brass: not really metal but really heavy rawk and great songwriting and vocals.
