Dog experts- Why does my dominant dog lick his pups?

He only does it when they have been outside in the rain. When they come in he starts licking their coats. It is odd behavior, any idea why he does it?

1. To clean them or mark them with his scent.

There is nothing that offends my dogs more than the stink of clean. :rofl:

Seriously, yeah, it's a scent marking thing. Every time I put clean sheet on the bed, the dog can harldy wait to jump on and vigorously rub himself over every inch... gotta put his stink on the sheets or they're no good.

3. He's drying them off and also reading the news.

I always used to think when I walked the dog that he wasn't just relieving himself and marking territory all over the neighborhood but reading his mail. "Hi Kato, it's Fluffy, sorry I missed you, drop me a line"... and if he wanted to reply, he'd piss on it. So that's what I'm convinced he was also doing... reading his mail and leaving reply messages. I just never could figure out who he was talking to or what they were discussing. ;)
