11. Hendrix was a definitive American musician
1. He was a session guitarist for and toured with Little Richard, the Isley Brothers, and King Curtis.

2. Never has been a 'best', never will be.

3. Debatable.

4. Neither. Debussy, Ravel and Sibelius.

5. The Allmans. The Grateful Dead are one of the worst bands in any genre, and any time, from any place on earth.

12.  re: the Dead --wonder why Duane liked playing with them then?
Edited on Fri Jan-02-04 04:30 PM by 56kid
or why they shared the bill intentionally with them at Watkins Glen?

or why they picked the same construction for their band? 2 guitars, bass, 2 drummers, keyboard?

my answers

1 -- Hendrix is an American. He was a U.S. paratrooper. Even the freepers would have to give him that.

2 -- I'm not familiar with the current crop, but Los Lobos kicks

3 -- money talks

4 -- today, I'll go with Beethoven

5 -- depends on the incarnation of the Dead and the Allman's. When Duane was alive, the Brothers; the Dead's peaks were 68-70 and 77-79, IMO. After that they started to lose their "punch".
Fleetwood Mac was also right up on worthy jam level when Peter Green was still with them.

14. He was a kind man, who took pity on the musically retarded
I think perhaps he saw it as charity work.

I'll double what you said about Los Lobos. I was a stage guard for them twice at UofO in Eugene, standing right behind the left speaker stack, and they KILLED.

And, they still kill.

15. LOL!!!
well, I don't have to agree with you, but your answer tickles my funny bone anyway.

Lesh was classically trained, degree in classical music before he joined the Dead, I'd hardly call that musically retarded. Everybody's got different taste, that's all.

As for Los Lobos, I saw them play in front of the World Trade Center on Puerto Rico Parade Day. Not only did they kick, but it was quite fun/subversive them going from old traditionals which pleased the mom and pop mainstream crowd, to playing in a completely searing, dangerous, distortion-laden (pick your adjective) style -- all right in front of the World Trade Center to boot.

19. Compadre!
so you know what I mean.

At the time and then later when the towers came down, I thought a lot about all the weird energy swirling around that place. I also saw Fripp play in the World Financial Center atrium a couple of times, another guitarist who sends out some very spooky (in a good, not evil sense) notes.
