Why did Sam-I-Am's friend refuse to eat |
|
green eggs and ham? What kind of a friend was he?
Also, why was Sam-I-Am so insistent?
tough questions.

1. He ask for tobasco sauce. |
|
Sam-I-Am copped a real tude and started putting the food in weird places like Box's and under Fox's. The friend just wanted a little friggin tobasco sauce! Is that too much too ask. Sam-I-Am turned into a real ass about the whole thing. Sam-I-Am was a well know crack-head hanging with the Lorax. They used to hang around on the corners of whoville.

why was he so resistant? His friend wouldn't try to poison him! Very untrusting fellow, I think.
Also, he could have been lying about loving them just to shut up his friend.

7. Sam was not his friend and I quote: |
|
"That Sam-I-am! That Sam-I-am! I do not like that Sam-I-am!"
I think that story sets a dangerous precedent. Harass someone until they can't takes no more and they will like you. At the end of that book that guy is loving those green eggs and ham, putting his arm around Sam....thanking him.....
Very disturbing. Not quite as disturbing as Rock-a-bye Baby...but pretty close!

http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/special_reports/arpaio/crime/060696a-1.htmlGreen bologna and pink shorts are a crime deterrent in this wacko's mind. I'm a Phoenician and he is a damn embarrassment.

Nosiree!
Clearly, in the beginning of the novel, Sam is seen on a unicycle moving around our protagonist with signs declaring "I AM SAM!" and the infamous "SAM I AM!".
Our protagonist is simply hanging out in Seussville minding his own business when this nut Sam infringes on his day. Then, this crazy guy Sam whips (out of nowhere, I might add) out a platter of two green eggs sunny side up, and a huge ham with a fork in it. Well, here is our protagonist faced with "Sam" whom he just met proffering a large platter of green eggs and ham. This is unacceptable! What is one of the first things you learn as a child? "Don't take candy from a stranger." Well, that applies to green eggs and ham as well.
Damn straight our protagonists says, in essence, "Get that crap out of my face, man!"
It matters not that our protagonist eventually enjoyed the green eggs and ham -- that was not the issue! The issue was that this little Sam dude was a stranger and proceeded to force unknown food on our protagonist.
If you were in the subway, and a guy comes up to you with a sign declaring that his name was "Sam", would you eat the green fries and Whopper that he might proffer to you? I dare say that you would not in a boat, with a goat, or in the rain unless you were insane!
I am with our protagonist on this one.

I wouldn't go near anyone named Sam, especially in New York!!! Yikes! Funny post. I always thought that protag always had it bad in that story. Forced into a decision he didn't want....sad days indeed.
Though, on a serious note, I've always thought that Geisel was sending a message to kids that you shouldn't always accept what a person tells you to, or an persuasive speaker demands of you. That's what I love about Geisel's work, you have to really read deep to get the true meaning.

I read a lot of Seuss. I find myself analyzing the books in the strangest ways.
But I agree with you, Geisel was a master. Read the Lorax again.

I've really been excited about reading that work again. It's been years since I last touched it! Have you seen the book of his political cartoons!? It's fantastic! I'm sure if the good man was alive today, he'd get a prime spot on DU's homepage! I'm sure he'd be leading the fight against Bush and the neo-cons along with Trudeau, McGruder and the rest... We need this man today, I wish he were alive to help our fight...........

I sure as heck wouldn't...I'd pitch the whole moldy, pushed to the back of the fridge container in the trash...where it belongs. ;)
