ok, final decision time.iMac or iBook G4?
I've been seeing some reports about some earlir iBook having some motherbroad issues--not sure which ones however(only readina bout dual USB models from about 2001 or so) I'll go for the 15 inch iMac--it does have the external speakers I would like, and I'd just need some extra RAM to 512MB...private message me or post here for your adice please :)

3. The dual usb IBook
is the one with the most issues, but some of the other ones are also having problems. It is mostly a logic board problem.

The answer depends. If you need portability, buy the laptop but make sure you get the Applecare with it because all Apple Powerbooks have problems.

With the desktop, no real problems. I have purchased the Applecare but never used it for the desktop models. But then, I have a grey G-3 relic that is ready to be put out to pasture.

18. What problems?
I have had a Powerbook for 2 years and it has performed flawlessly.

The reason I bought it out of my own pocket is that my employer provided me with a Gateway notebook that never worked and was repeatedly sent to the shop for repair!

4. I'm in love with my G4 Power Mac with Panther
Edited on Fri Jan-02-04 11:46 PM by Woodstock
G4 Power Mac is good because you can add more capability to it really easily.

It's going for $1300 now. You can use your existing monitor. 1.25 GHz. Came with 256 RAM but I got a Mac chip from Amazon for only $50 and added it myself to get to 512.

But I really want a flat panel monitor to go with it now.

On edit, sorry, looks like you are in the market for a laptop, though, I read your post too fast...

8. well not locked in for the iBook yet...
the main reason being is that I want to be able to transfer my Tunes stuff easily, and the iBook G4 would be the perfect way. HOWEVER, I stiill like how much space the 15 inch iMac saves...

5. iBook G4 or actually get a TiBook instead if you can afford it
I've owned several Powerbooks (as well as PCs) and the TiBooks are sweet machines...very reliable...cool looking and pretty light.

If a iBook is more in your range, get the G4 version and an Airport card. iMacs are cool, but then again you can't go mobile.

6. There's quality control issues right now with Macs.
I just saw on slashdot a couple of days ago there was some discussion of quality control problems with some Apple stuff right now. I think it's IPods and laptops, but you better check.

7. Don't buy now... Macworld Keynote this Tuesday
That's when Uncle Steve announces all the new stuff, and usually results in price drops or performance boosts for existing products.

11. actually I will
just not at the same time
Looking at my desk now,if I brought the big old 20 inch iMac, my DSL modem would be hidden behind it. But with the current iMacs You can just flip the screen up and check on it :) But $2199 :wow: ...the iBook G4 is really sweet, and I can watch DVDs anywhere and have fun with WiFi. I thnk alot of the current controversery is aout the dual USB models, not the actual G4 model, that and some people having issues with iPod batteries. Mine is the original 5 GB iPod, and it's still going strong. Should I go with the iMac first, I'll just backup my iTunes folder to the iPod and zip it over, authrozie and go, OR use my Firewire cable and send the stuff over.

They also have 17 inch iMacs for like..$1199 as refub over on the Apple Store website..hmmmm....

13. yes, don'*t buy now, but for another reason
Apple seems to have quality issues at the moment. Especially the new iBooks fail very frequently. I wouldn't buy one, until Apple has addressed the problem.

15. "Dead iBook owners take protest to MacWorld show"
Faithful Apple users plan to put Quality Control issues center stage at the MacWorld show in San Francisco next week, to highlight a problem that Apple refuses to acknowledge.

iBook owners have been plagued by display problems and logic board failures this year; more than 300 have signed up for a potential class action suit.

Apple insists there are "no known problems" with the iBook, despite hundreds of incident reports to to the contrary. We can vouch that this is an issue from our own experience, as both of The Register's US iBooks have died this year, one after only ten weeks.

Perhaps you should consider an iMac until these problems are solved.

16. I have a vintage iBook from December 2000
It's the last of the clamshell models, and I've never had any trouble with it, other than the fact that it's a bit heavy. (What WAS the point of all that extra plastic anyway?)

When I had to get a new hard disk for my January 2000 iMac SE (it was never the same after it moved across the country packed up in a commercial moving van) I added memory and upgraded it to OS X and decided that I should do the same for the iBook, so that my two computers would "match."

I find that I use the iBook a lot more than the iMac, largely because of the portability factor. Both computers have AirPort cards, so I can take the iBook to my local coffee source, which has free WiFi. Also, when Angels in America came on HBO, I was able to sit in the living room with the iBook and work on my current translation job without missing the program.

The upgrades have pushed back the day when I will need to replace my computers, but I like the portability so much that I'm thinking of going with a 15" Powerbook with a 12" iBook strictly for trips to Japan and the like.

17. I very much like my PowerBook G4 15 inch
I bought it because it could run System 9 or System 10 (rather than the at the time latest 17 inch that could run only System 10) and I had heard a lot of software won't (yet) run on System 10, which turned out to be true. I replaced a G3 all-in-one from 1998 and the new one is much more complicated (to allow for multiple users' privacy) but so fast and so nice. In 10 months, I've had only one minor problem that was quickly corrected in a phone call to Apple. Strongly recommended.
