I want to take one character out of one picture and cut-and-paste them into another picture. Is this easy to do?

1. Depends on what you mean by easy |

For me it would just be alot of 'Shift+click'ing with the Magic wand and the lasso (select contiguous regions and select hand drawn regions)

2. Do you mean a person or a letter? |

I'm not a terribly advanced user of The Gimp; I had better luck doing cut and paste operations with another free program, Photo Impressions, which comes with many digital cameras. I'm sure you could do it with The Gimp, too. It's just that as with anything with that program, you have to navigate the interface and figure out HOW to do it. Once you manage that, it'll probably be pretty easy.
