I had bought a HP 5550C scanner in July. I used it for 2 months then stopped until now.
While preview scans look 100% perfect, actual scans end up with a purple band appearing at the edge.
Oddly, my previous scanner, a 4470C, eventually deposited purple stripes randomly throughout a scan!
Sigh.
Epson Perfection 3170, here I come...
Glad I took advantage of Best Buy's product replacement plan. Send 'em the crap, they send out a check.
Also had a HP Deskjet 1220C - didn't last 3 years and I barely used it before the rollers jammed up! Their laserjets are okay, but they sure cost a lot...

1. Hrm...I have a ScanJet4400C...I haven't had problems with it. |
|
But then, I don't use it much. However, I have a Canon printer that I don't much like. I'm replacing it with an Epson. I have the HP Photosmart printer too; the 230. It's pretty decent.

10. If you can afford it, |
|
get the Epson Stylus Photo 2200 - or an Epson model that doesn't print the large format paper but uses the same ultrachrome pigment inks. You'll get longevity they claim lasts for decades, and the printer prints the BEST matte and b/w prints of any. If you use premium lustre paper (60 year lifespan), you'll get the benefits of gloss without the occasional bronzing effect...

11. I don't do much photo printing...I need a good general use printer. |
|
My dad has an Epson that is great. I got this Canon free with internet service years ago, so it's not like I'm in love with it.
The HP Photosmart was a gift, too. For my purposes it's ok, but it's not the greatest thing in the world. It screws some printing up.

For old photo prints I want to restore or enhance (such as faded 20 year old prints), I rather need a scanner... though otherwise I see your point! :D

And if you have two of them on your vehicle, it's "antennas."
"Antennae" are on insects!
This always pissed me off when I was in the service, people writing operations orders with the phrase "attach antennae before bringing vehicle to the ready line" or something similar, then bringing them to me to proofread. I would invariably circle "antennae," write something like "we are not deploying in insects, change this to 'antennas'" and give it back.
It usually only took once.
And now that I'm a civilian, people still do this shit, saying they have antennae on their cars. Only if they're driving VW Bugs do they have antennae.

4. i am an epson fan myself |
|
i had an epson 1520 that i loved, but couldn't get fixed. so i bought another on e-bay. the best thing about their printers is that the cartridges are transparent, so they are easy to refill. hp make a big mystery with their black carts. someone lent me an hp for a while, and i killed several by refilling with the wrong color. i also have a 2450 scanner. it is great.

I use the Epson Stylus Photo 2200. I wouldn't risk using generic inks that may not produce the color gamut or longevity (80 years on watercolor paper, 40 years on premium glossy, 60 years on premium luser - all far better longevity rates than typical color photographs, that'll start to fade in little as little as 25 years...)

Mine is in the closet collecting dust now. Piece of Crap.
Replaced it with a Visioneer. Half the price, less problems with drivers and performance. Works just fine.

15. If you pay the xtra bucks for an OfficeJet rather than a DeskJet, |
|
there's a diff. I have a d145 that is the only "all in one" I have owned that seems to work without a hitch and produces quality output.
It sits beside a laserjet 4 that's probably 15 years old and running like a top.

18. I kinda like Lexmark and they are a lot cheaper than HP. |
|
The software is easier to use too. Compaq and HP are off my list in the near future. They have practically no support that is useful. The parts are way more expensive than other brands and some parts are downright shabby in the way they are put together.
