I'm building my DVD collection--ask me anything!
Edited on Sun Jan-04-04 04:28 PM by CanuckAmok
Mrs. Amok gave me a DVD store gift certificate for Christmas, so I'm building the library with excellent films I know I'll want to see again and again.

We have a few already, but I'm padding the ranks with some oldies but goodies.

The latest additions:
A Clockwork Orange
Bullitt
Boogie Nights
Lost in La Mancha
The Kingdon (1)

edit: La Mancha, not Lamancia!

4. No...that's a good call, though!
I used to have it on VHS, but I can't find it. I'll put it on the list!

5. Why not Dr Strangelove
Scarface, Patton, Das Boot, Run Lola Run, and Dolemite?

8. We have Scarface and Lola...
Dr Strangelove is fun, but I'm not a Peter Sellers fan.

6. If you don't already have it, I would highly recommend...
Apocalypse Now - Redux. The DVD has almost a whole hours' worth of scenes that weren't included in the original version. It's been completely re-cut and now has a running time of 3 hours 22 min... A really long movie.

7. We have that one...
...and I have to say I understand why those scenes were cut. I prefer the original version (which we have on VHS).

10. Cannibal: The Musical
Trey Parker's student film is one of those So Bad It's Good movies. It's a musical based on Alferd Packer, the only man in US history to ever be convicted of cannibalism. You can see the early evolution of South Park humor in this film, plus hear hysterical songs. But the best part of the DVD is the commentary track which is drunkenly goofy.

17. What about Albert Fish?
Wasn't he convicted of murdering and eating children back in the 1930s?

25. Hhhhmmmm
I don't think they actually convicted him of cannibalism. Maybe somebody should write a musical about him though.

26. Like this...?
"Albert Fish! Albert Fisn!
That's a most intriguing dish!
Is it chicken, or some exotic fish?
It glistens in the sunlight,
It slides right down the throat,
It could be aligator,
Or a type of mountain goat...
I'd love to ask for seconds,
Tho' that would be quite rude,
But Mister Fish I must say,
I do enjoy your food!"

12. Get 'em where they cost the least...
I got X2 at Wal-mart for $14.99.

Walmart, the MPAA, they're both evil. So I don't care where I get it from. I usually to go amazon.com because they have the lowest prices though.

13. I usually buy used copies...
...but as I mentioned, Mrs. Amok gave me a gift certificate from a DVD store, so that's where I'm shopping, at least until I use up the gift card.

Nothing, and I repeat, NOTHING, could tempt me into a WalMart.

I'd also vote for anything that either John Cusac or Harvey Keitel have been in, but that's just my preference.

15. Bullitt!
Great choice.
I also recommend Patton and Braveheart for war films, The Exorcist and the Ring, as well as the Hannibal Lecter trilogy for something scarier, Something about Mary and Super Troopers for Comedy, Dirty Harry for a cop film, a number of Clint Eastwood westerns (I love old Clint Eastwood films) as well as the Simpsons Complete Season Three (D'oh) and the Mystery Science Theater Boxed Sets.
I could name many, many more If I wanted too.

18. I agree about Bullitt
Great, overlooked cop film. For its time it was very hip and innovative. That one's in my DVD collection too.

My next winter project ('04/'05) will be doing a Bullitt conversion on a '68 Mustang Fastback...

19. Get "Zulu!" Cool war movie
But I must warn you, the effects look pretty chinsy by today's standards. The spears kind of clearly stick into the battlements and not the Welshmen.

22. Do you prefer full-screen or widescreen?
I NEVER buy full-screen unless it's on a DVD that contains both wide & full. Widescreen rules!

30. I'm not that choosy...
I prefer widescreen, but unless it's a movie with exceptional cinematography, I'm content with TV aspect ratio. It's easier to watch without my glasses, too! (larger image)
