O.K. Dems, lets stroll down the 2003 memory lane, with David...
Letterman and Jay Leno on Howard Dean...

"Howard Dean was endorsed by former Vice President Al Gore and now he is getting advice from Al Gore. And I'm thinking, who better to give advice than the guy who couldn't even get elected with the most votes?" —David Letterman

"Howard Dean was endorsed by Al Gore. Now, if Dean could get Gray Davis to campaign for him, that would put him over the top." —Jay Leno

"Al Gore has endorsed Howard Dean for president. That's pretty fitting, the guy that didn't beat Bush endorsing the guy who won't beat Bush." —David Letterman

"Presidential candidate Howard Dean is now being attacked for dodging the draft. I never knew this about the guy — but now I know this guy is presidential material." —David Letterman

"The New York Times is reporting that back in the '60s, presidential candidate Howard Dean used a letter from a doctor about a back condition to keep himself out of the draft in Vietnam and then spent 10 months skiing. Well it sounds like he's done the impossible. He actually made Bill Clinton and George Bush look like war heroes." —Jay Leno

"Presidential Democratic front-runner Howard Dean admitted to Chris Matthews on the 'Hardball' show that he got out of the draft because of a bad back. He had a curvature of the spine. Apparently it curved too far to the left." —Jay Leno

"In a recent interview, Howard Dean admitted that he used to drink and smoke pot. So, now all he needs to put him over the top is a sex scandal." —David Letterman

"In his new book, 'Winning Back America,' Dean talks about his wealthy prep school and how he used to get drunk. Let me get this straight — he had rich parents, drank a lot, went to prep school and avoided Vietnam. He's the alternative to George Bush? I think he is George Bush." —Jay Leno

"Howard Dean is a politician, a medical doctor and a Democrat. So he has three reasons to tell women to take off their clothes now." —Jay Leno

"Former Vermont Governor Howard Dean's presidential campaign is handing out tongue depressors to volunteers with his name on them. Wasn't that Clinton's trick?" —Jay Leno

3. In all fairness, I'm looking for Clark jokes...
Here's one....

"We've got us a Democratic general! That's like a gay black Republican — a rare beast." —Jon Stewart, on Wesley Clark

4. Here's some more....
"President Clinton is now denying that he is endorsing General Wesley Clark. Do you know the difference between General Clark and Clinton? The general knows how to control his privates." —Jay Leno

" participated in the debate with the Democrats. He was the new star. And he had to answer the question 'Why is he suddenly a Democrat?' He said he did not fit in with the Republicans because he is pro-choice, pro-affirmative action, and once when he was young and impressionable, he fought in a war." —Bill Maher

"The Democratic frontrunner now is former general Wesley Clark. Over the weekend he is at a fundraiser and he is explaining how he believes in time travel. Paging Al Gore, paging Al Gore." —David Letterman

"Today, Clark time-traveled to the Democratic convention and found out he wasn't nominated because of stupid time-traveling remarks." —David Letterman

5. How dare they! Now Leno and Letterman are the enemy along with
Clinton, Carville, Begala, the DLC, any Democrat in Washington, Any Democrat who has not been in the party for 30+ years, Any Democrat who dares question or doubt Dean's winning the nomination before any votes have been cast. Evil the lot of them.

8. You think Leno or Letterman have the guts to run for dog catcher?
Especially Leno. He sits on his throne and likes to listen to himself speak in his squeaky prepubescent voice and giggle as he pulls out the scalpel and bag of toxic, thinly veiled but hostile jokes.

Nope. Leno wont be running for any substantial position of responsibility and leadership, certainly as a Democrat when he has the safe fortress of NBC and his adopted, cherished and unearned position from Johny Carson.

His civic duty will continue to marginalize good peoples actions and courage, and hide behind his desk while he is doing it.

I would be so proud of myself if I was Jay Leno. Its people like him that make this country the "great" country that it is.

11. Fair question. I have never liked humor at someone elses expense.
I think its cheap and easy. So I think my answer would be yes.

The difference is that at this point you cannot compare the two situations because they, especially Leno, are avoiding confronting Bush on almost every issue, and yet as you can see from the quotes above, they are attacking candidates that have the courage to run for president even when there are media pundits unfairly shooting them down, even when there is no logical reason to, other than to discredit and marginalize them as candidates. The consequences of talk show hosts and newspeople shooting down good people is that we eventually will have no one but Republicans and Republicanish people running, um, kind of like, now.

Ultimately my answer would be yes, that is if George Bush was in the same position and had worked as hard as these candidates have, you bet I would feel the same way. For me, its about playing fair. The playing field is not fair at all. And as supporters of candidates, its our responsibility to defend them and support them against the unfairness. That was our downfall with both Clinton AND Gore.

Seems to me we have a system that demands Justice for those who are seeking to improve things, and bestows Mercy on those who do not want to change anything except what essentially benefits them. Although what many dont realize is in the long run, what benefits everyone, benefits EVERYONE.

And for the road, I think Lenos show and sometimes Letterman to a degree although I like him and his show much better, would better serve the public to try and throw in some positive, uplifting information, talent and humor, than always going the cynical easy route. I think cynicism breeds negativity and disconnection and even hatred.
