Ok, I never did really get it ... but whatever happened to swooning? |
|
The closest I ever got to seeing it was on TV: coverage of some British rock band in America years ago with mobs shrieking soon-to-be swooners.
But that was years ago.
Does anybody still swoon? And if so, why?
If you still swoon, when is the last time you swooned?

1. Women stopped wearing corsets |
|
I just about passed out the one and only time I gave blood, but I don't suppose that counts. :P

10. I always had the impression swooning at the sight of blood was highly respectable. |
|
Like y'know, if they come home to find one lying on the floor with a whiskey bottle knocked over and spirits spilled everywhere, then one could always declare, "Why! I must have pricked my finger with my sewing needle and swooned: you know how I just can't abide the sight of blood. Oh my gracious! What is this mess? Someone must have come in whilst I was unconscious!"

2. My BIL swooned at his wedding and had to be held up by his best man. |
|
Then, at his best man's wedding, he swooned again. No corsets involved. He will NEVAH live it down!

14. Corsets , no. Alcohol.....i betcha. |
|
Lots of alcohol served all night long, to within hours of the wedding. That can make a groom and his best man swoon, and can make guy choke himself on a pretzel while watching football on TV.

5. I had to carry a thing of smelling salts at my sister's wedding.... |
|
I was maid of honor and there was some fear that she would pass out.
:eyes:
This was damn near 40 years ago and I really wondered about it at the time.

6. I'm glad you told me that: I really thought smelling salts were used to treat "the vapors." |

I figured it would be an attack of the vapors. Why should she pass out just because she was getting married??? I had to stand lots more time than she did.

"the vapors" = probably refers to having to deal with reality. In the old days.

or steel. Most women swooned in the old days because their stays prevented any exertion at all. The wealthier the live style, the tighter the corset, and the more prolonged childhood. Ah, those were the days.
