Before I start: PLEASE... let's not turn this into a long snipe-fest like the one I just perused from last night after the game.
I'm a big LSU fan, and I think they're deserving of a share. I also think USC is deserving of a share. The BCS was allegedly set up to prevent a split NC, but of course, since they only control who gets the coaches' trophy (and the AP is still independent), I can't for the life of me think why they thought they could accomplish that goal.
The BCS was ALSO, however, set up to assure a 1-2 matchup according to the BCS ranking, and to bring a bit more objectivity to that ranking. This year, however, there were three teams with the same record at the end of the year. So there was bound to be someone left out of the 1-2 matchup. If it hadn't been USC, it would have been a 12-1 LSU, who would also have been able to legitimately claim they deserved to be there (last I heard, OK was the only team people were saying didn't belong there, but I think all 3 teams were deserving).
In this year's case, barring a playoff to allow at least 4 teams to decide it on the field, and having 3 deserving teams with equal records, the BCS actually did us all a favor by allowing for a split NC between two teams with one loss. If there were no BCS, LSU would be No. 2 with the same record against quality opposition and a great bowl win. If there were no BCS and USC had lost their one game a week after LSU, THEY would likely have been No. 2, with the same record as LSU against quality opposition and a great bowl win. With the BCS the way it worked this year, both teams get a share.
And until they can play it on the field (which ain't gonna happen), I think it worked out just perfect.
GEAUX Tigers!!! And congrats to the Trojans, too! Would that we could have played.
