2. 'Do you believe in evolution?' |
|
"No."
"Why?"
"Because the bible says..."

5. As soon as someone uses the bible as a reference in an argument... |
|
They have automatically lost. It's not a reference book. It's philosophy, basically. I'm a freaking Christian, and I don't believe the bible literally. Duckie

13. I'm a Christian and I use the bible in arguments. |
|
I used it the other day, when I got into a discussion about raising the minimum wage. A coworker said that rate should stay the same, and if you could not make on what you make you where on your own. I made the point that we are should take care of one another, and used the quote out of the bible , "who so ever takes care of the lest of thee there for takes care of me." So I think that it can be used in an argument, just not one about science.

That's what I meant. Most of the arguing I tend to do has to do with science. Quoting someone's religion back at them rocks. We do it when it comes to the argument you described. Duckie

4. Those poor kids are going to screwed up. |
|
Wasn't it voltaire who said something along the lines of "If they can convince you absurdities, they can make you commit attrocities."
Those kids are getting indoctrinated in absurdities. And so we have growing ranks of people willing break and divide this country in the name of religion. :(

"It's just easier to teach them about the flood..."
Yeah, it's easier to let a toddler wander freely at the top of a flight of stairs too, you clod.

at that boy wanting to win a nobel prize in "creation science"
I guess all that conclusive data from radiometric dating is just folley to these people and the mass spectrometer must be the work of the devil.

11. I'm a biologist, and I teach at a state university.... |
|
That was appalling. What that video showed should be criminal. Those charlatans should be prosecuted for deliberately spreading ignorance and lies. There is a point where one person's personal spirituality becomes toxic to those around them, and to the good of the rest of society.

15. Whats with these people and their obsession with atheist professors. |
|
Edited on Tue Jan-30-07 01:28 AM by Evoman
I am also a Biology grad student, and most of the profs here are agnostic/atheist, and none of them have ever shouted at students or called them idiots. Most of them are really decent guys who try to stay away from religious discussion in the classroom.
Lol..seriously, whats the deal.
(I've had some challenges from christian students in the lab I teach...I take them seriously, and discuss my position calmly with them)
