February is my least favourite month. |
|
That's because this is the month I have to endure the great unwashed masses' pronouncing it "Feb-you-ary". I can hardly wait till March.

5. Well, I have always been told not to pronounce the "r"! |
|
But us southerners tend to shorten words anyway!

9. Not that I've noticed... |
|
aside from dropping G's at the end of words like "running", that is...Southern accents tend to elongate a lot of words, actually (splitting the diphthong in words like "July" so it's two syllables instead of one and sounds like "JOO-lie", for instance)

I've lived in the South most of my life. Don't have an accent, though. (Or rather, I do, but it's "General American" and not Southern.) Still hear "you're not from around here, are you?" occasionally, despite having lived here 20 years.

22. Do I understand correctly that you contend |
|
the word "July" has only one syllable? Or are you talking about the "Ju" part being pronounced as if it were two syllables (e.g. "Jee-you" + "lie").
Just wondering 'cause last I checked, July was a two-syllable word, regardless of one's dialect....

25. The former...wasn't clear about that |
|
sorry...that's what I meant by splitting the diphthongal vowel sound (which seems to be more common in Southern accents than in any other American dialect)

And those who think it's too hard to say "bru" should go to a sports bar and watch the Boston "Bewins" play, and maybe kick back a few "bews".

16. Yes, by some though not all, which is why I rail against it every year. |
|
It's particularly galling to hear newsreaders, reporters, and announcers say it, because they're supposedly somewhat erudite and they're being paid money to pronounce things correctly.
Another example where "you" raised its ugly head happened at the end of the Cold War when the Balkan states were all gaining independence, and Peter Mansbridge of The National kept referring to Lithuania as "Lith-you-ania" instead of "Lith-wayne-ia." Being in a bilingual country, I've also heard the term "bi-ling-gyoo-al", which gets up my wick no end; it's pronounced "bi-ling-gwal". At least Mansbridge says "February" correctly, though, even if the reporters don't always.
Sportscasters -- well, I don't expect much from them since they're generally bigdumbjocks who don't know better, so I can let it slide.

28. In the end euphonics will win out. The least ugly pronounciation |
|
will always become the norm. There is no point in convoluting words, unless it is to differentiate them from another. Just as Janruary changed so will February.

|
In fact, they list it as the first pronunciation, ahead of "Feb-ru-ary."

I start getting my music list cranked up. Here's what I've heard already:
A+
The Shins - Wincing The Night Away
A
Sloan - Never Hear The End Of It Fall Out Boy - Infinity On High (only listened once)
A-
John Mellencamp - Freedom's Road Bloc Party - Weekend in the City (only listened once) Kristin Hersh - Learn To Sing Like A Star
B+ Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter- Like, Love, Lust & The Open Halls of the Soul
B-
Katharine McPhee - self-titled (I bought it to support her. It's very listenable, as you can tell by my grade, and I love her voice. Wanted to hear more of that voice, and she needed to develop her personality more.)
C+
Norah Jones - Not Too Late Lily Allen - Alright, Still
C-
Ashley Tisdale - Headstrong (I find her attractive, but she can't sing very well - and while the CD is better than Paris Hilton's, the music is mostly R&B/hip hop lite with sappy ballads. You can tell that Sarah Hudson is a better singer when you compare their versions of "Unlove You."
samples from:
Jordan Pruitt - No Ordinary Girl (B - she has talent and some delightfully catchy songs. I might get it even though the lyrics focus on the high school crowd.)
Deerhoof - Friend Opportunity (A-)
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Some Loud Thunder (C+, but buy "Emily Jean Stock." CD sounds a little better than last time, but I still don't think I'd be crazy about this CD except for the song I mentioned.)
Kelly Sweet - We Are One ( B- )
And there are more that I'm forgetting, I'm sure.
