80's Metal Band You Can Still Stand To Listen To... Besides Metallica
Iron Maiden - Heard "Piece Of Mind" earlier today, and it still didn't suck.

15. "Peace Sells..." - one of the best metal albums. ever.
Edited on Wed Jan-07-04 10:45 PM by nu_duer
I used to call Mustaine the "metal messiah"

I think the band's greatness has yet to be recognized.

These guys were great. Most of the metal bands from the 80's are forgettable.

3. When I read the thread, i thought "Iron Maiden"!
Totally.

Also Queensryche and Dio.

No hair bands, dammit. Poison still sucks. And Guns and Roses, though not a "hair" band, still suck.

11. Come on now...
Axl Rose is a total asshat, but Appetite for Destruction was a great album. There was never really anything else like it, and there hasn't really been since. The rest of their stuff was pretty forgettable. Mr. Brownstone is still one of my favorite songs.

18. So, even according to you,
they had one good album, and otherwise suck.

To me, appetite for deastruction was a cliche ridden piece of crap. Axl Rose sucked as a singer, and "Slash" and his pathetic cliche "hat" was nothing but a glorified pile of "guitarist" smegma noodling. Rory Gallagher is a better guitarist than Slash. Hell, Dwight Yokum is a better guitarist than Slash.

What a POS band that was. When they first came out, I thought, "<expletive>, just as bad as the hair bands, but instead of stupid hair, they have that stupid &*^@#$ hat and #*^(*(%^$ napkin thing. Screw this band." And by golly, I was NEVER, and I mean NEVER, proved wrong. Pure crap, all the way around.

"Welcome to the Jungle" my ass. Bunch of whinging *@#$ idiots. Black Sabbath could kick their ass with just one hig-hat being played by a drunk, cocaine-laden bill ward, ca. 1978.

22. same. none.
OK I saw AC/DC in the 80's and liked them live but I was more into punk in those days and it wasn't cool to like metal.

8. Anthrax
Greatest Metal band of ALL TIME. Period. End of discussion.

Hell, I've even still got my stoner jacket with the Anthrax patch on it (it's got DRI, ST, Megadeth, AC/DC, DKs, and The Stooges, too, but I yanked the Metallica one off after the tragedy of the "black" album).

Def Leppard was never listenable
pure yucko crud. I was into Pyromania for a while, but I've grown up enough to realize what a yucko album that was.

Def Leppard is right up there with Dokken, Poison, and Vinnie Vincent, IMO

10. Maiden definitely stands the test of time
At least the classic albums. I haven't tried listening to any of their new stuff. They were such good musicians who wrote interesting music with sometimes cornball lyrics. Live After Death was the shit.

12. Oh yeah, Maiden, Megadeth, Priest, Dio, Ozzy wRhodes, early Crue...
Edited on Wed Jan-07-04 10:34 PM by nu_duer
Sure I've missed many (Overkill, Testament, were they 80s or 90s?)

All these bands still rock me.

(Anybody remember a band named Fastway?)

Oh yeah, and don't forget Brittany Fox.

Well, on second thought, go ahead and forget Brittany Fox - lol.

But evilDUer horns up to DIO instead!

(btw, MAIDEN will be in NYC for FOUR dates later this month, before heading to Caleeeeforrnia)

16. If you define metal broadly to include the stuff that was really
hard rock--and many did define it that way back then--then there are plenty of them. Guns'N'Roses, AC/DC, Aerosmith (the older stuff), Whitesnake, Bang Tango, Cats In Boots, Salty Dog, Motorhead...I still listen to this shit a lot. The "Wild Side" show on knac.com plays this kind of music on Saturdays--the only time I listen to radio these days.

I wrote for a rock magazine back then, and hard rock was my favorite music and my specialty (which is why I may have mentioned some bands you may not be familiar with).
