Poll question: Contacts or glasses?
Silly post-midnight poll. What's your preference (for yourself)?

neither but my eyes are far from perfect. Perhaps you should meet my left eye, 20/400 and my right 20/20.

5. Wow
That's quite a mismatch! How do you correct the 20/400 eye without glasses or contacts?

My eyes are quite different as well, but it's only a difference between really bad, and really really bad.

10. *groans* its awful
Laser surgery wont do it Peter, seen the doc a couple of times. However my right eye really helps out. Drawback is I need a waver signed to get my learners permit, and my damned parents havent got it signed yet. Its all good though, I see like I do out of my right eye, its good, but my left eye is just eek. Supposely the brain is so used to not seeing out of the eye, even laser surgery wont help.

with only one corrected lens? The other could be plain glass (or plastic).
Or one contact lens?

A bit surprising to me. I thought it would be more evenly split. I am torn myself, alternating back and forth. Best (and worst) of both worlds.

11. That was my initial reaction too
Wore 'em for many many years, but got a bit overcomfortable with them, leaving them in far too long. Eventually, my eyes rebelled.

After a couple years back with glasses, I want to switch back. Or back and forth at least.

Actually, I do wear glasses. I've never worn contacts, as they seem to be to much trouble.I never have to mess with my glasses; off and on in under 2 seconds. Plus, they make me appear smarter than I actually am.

33. My husband loves when I wear glasses
Edited on Thu Jan-08-04 01:39 PM by Pithlet
I picked contacts, though. I've been very nearsighted since I was 5 years old, and was teased and thought of as the nerdy kid with thick glasses all through school. My parents wouldn't let me have contacts until I was a senior in high school (oh, how I begged for them!). So, I think I have a complex about how I look in glasses. I even bought a very trendy pair of frames last time; the retro squarish black frames. Husband loves them. Alas, I still hate how I look in them.

I wear my glasses around the house, and on routine errands. Contacts for all other occasions.

22. Putting stuff in your eyes
I always had that same aversion, but in college, I finally got so tired of wearing glasses constantly (thick ones, too), that I gave in and tried contacts.

The optometrist spent a lot of time with me training me on putting them in, taking them out. It must have been exhausting for him. He later said I was his most difficult 'pupil'. But the training worked, and soon it became quite routine for me.

Never could wear them more than 4-5 hours....

And the RELIEF when I took them out!

Now that I need reading glasses contacts are even less attractive to me, and I'm too chicken to try the laser treatment.

Seriously myopic here also. I wear contacts during the day and my glasses in the early evening on. I find glasses can annoy me, especially in the Summer, but some days contacts do too and I just keep the glasses on. Depends on my mood.

26. Glasses Now
Used to wear contact lenses. Then the industry decided, with no data, that contact lenses were dangerous because of potential eye injuries. (Even though i work in an office.) Contacts were banned from the premises.

So i quit wearing them. Then a couple of years ago, this time with data, they re-approved them, showing they were actually safer than glasses with respect to splashing liquids and vapors. Go figure!

Now, i've only got one good eye, from the MS, so i don't see the point in getting just one contact lens.

27. Glasses here, too.
I tried contacts for a couple of years, back when the daily-wear soft ones came down in price, but I have thyroid problems and, hence, dry eyes. After spending a couple of months dribbling synthetic tears in my eyes seven or eight times a day, I decided it was always going to be that way and went back to glasses.

Besides that, I'm only mildly myopic -- just enough to be annoying -- so I only really need my glasses when I'm driving (especially at night) or watching a sporting event, concert or a movie.

Hell, I'm a bit of a geek anyway, and they sort of fit the whole image I can't really escape anyway.

for 20 years now. I really like them and feel I have better vision. I used to have soft lenses, but switched to hard when I went to college and they are much more durable.

I have some cool looking glasses that I wear at night or on weekends, though. Think Lisa Loeb.

29. Reminds me of a joke...
A guy gets pulled over by a state trooper. The trooper looks at the guy's license and says, "Sir, it says here you're supposed to wear corrective lenses. Where're your glasses?"

"But officer," the guy says, "I have contacts."

The trooper replies, "I don't care who you know...!"

32. I've worn both
and prefer Glasses, only because they're so easy to put on and take off.

I do like contacts, though, because I can wear them in the shower, while swimming, and they don't make my face look all cluttered like glasses do.

I wore glasses since I was 3 years old. When I was 15 I got contacts, and wore them for about 7 years, but just got tired of them.

They were soft contacts, so if I got my nails done (i.e. fake nails), I couldn't put them in or take them out w/o tearing them.

I was really bad about doing the major cleaning-thing once a week, so they'd get deposits on them which were uncomfy.

If I went anywhere like the beach, or an amusement park, I'd have to make sure I had my case and extra drops in case any goo or sand or whatever got in my eyes.

After a while, I longed for the ease and convenience of glasses. I can't wear them in as many situations as I could with contacts, but I still prefer them 2:1 :)

42. I have pictures of me in Kindergarden
Before the glasses---eyes all squinty. I looked like I ether smelled something REALLY bad or had terrible constipation.

Then, I got glasses.

Oh that improved my look ALOT :not:.

Think of the way glasses looked in 1979 or so.

I had owl-eyes at a very young age. And for a double-dip of good luck, I have astigmatism, very very bad astigmatism.

Back in the 70's, they didn't have the paper-thin lenses they have now. Oh no. ooooh no.

In addition to having owl eyes, the lenses were so thick that they magnified the size of my eyes like 10x's.

I looked like I was wearing those goofy-eye glasses they sell at Spencers and other gag stores---the ones with the big goony eyes :(

I think I went to contacts just because the fugging glasses were so heavy--seriously! I have a permanent nudge behind my ears from the weight of the glasses.

However, now I have paper thin lenses in once-unthinkable wire frames. They look like normal people glasses, not something that Jerry Lewis would wear for gags :)

on a side note---do kids call kids with glasses "four eyes" anymore? Or is that *totally* 1980's and earlier?

I see things much more clearly with contacts; but I can only wear them for so long before they start to feel uncomfortable.

Also, if I want to read small print with contacts on, I need a magnifying glass. I'm afraid I'm about due for bifocals...

45. I had LASIK surgery five years ago
it was the best thing I've ever done for myself. First time in 32 years I'd been able to so much as walk down a hall without contacts or glasses. It's wonderful.

I did ten years of research before settling on a surgeon, though. I do recommend doing your homework beforehand; there's too many fly-by-nights doing LASIK these days.

I look like a mega geek in glasses. I have fairly thick glasses. My husband thinks I look alright in them though and thinks that it is funny that I ask if he cares if I wear them in the evening.
I've been wearing contacts since sixth grade after getting glasses in second grade. I did some damage to my eyes wearing them. Now I get a new pair every month and have for the past two years. My eyes have healed now.
