I'm going to Cuba!
Much like the rest of my life, on whim, J and I have decided to head on out to Cuba sometime soon-ish. My usual travel fare - staying on farms and in peoples houses and hostels, cheap and rustic. I love it. I'm giddy with excitement.

Now I'm getting ready to go to boys show so I'm not replying much, but I'd love to hear about other DUers Cuba experiences if they've had them. I don't need beginners/first time advice, just generally like to hear about others experiences.

I'm sort of drunk.

I was just looking at C$400-something for return tickets today. We wont go for a few months, but yeah.
As I said to EP below, Cuba doesn't stamp American passports, to US citizens can leave from other countries.

17. No doubt
I have pondered before what would happen if I sold my worldly goods and went to South America.

Of course, I wouldn't sell the binoculars or the scope, so it would be a short trip with the remaining 500 bucks. :P

20. I've never been
I am going to Florida at the end of next month, after which I will have seen enough American birds that I can head south for reals.

I've said before that I want to see most of the birds here before I turn my attention elsewhere, and it's going to be odd when that day comes.

600 baby. :D

24. Not so far from here
There's a very lively atmosphere
Everybody's going there this year
And there's a reason
The season opened last July
Ever since the USA went dry
Everybody's going there
And I'm going too

I'm on my way to Cuba, that's where I'm going
Cuba, that's where I'll stay
Cu-BAAAAA, where wine is flowing
And where those dark-eyed stellas
light their fellas' Panatellas
Cuba, where all is happy
Cuba, where all is gay
Why don't you plan a wonderful trip
to Havana; hop on a ship
and I'll see you
in C-U... B-A

Why don't you do your drinking like a Cuban
instead of hiding in the cellar?
Since Prohibition, tell me, how have you been?
(A mighty frightened little fella)
Why don't you pour it from a bottle
instead of a tiny silver flask?
Drink your scotch, rum or gin
where the drys can't get in
The finest bars are there
Cigars are there that only are made in
Cuba, where all is happy
Cuba, where all is gay
Why don't you plan a wonderful trip
to Havana; hop on a ship
and I'll see you
in C-U... B-A

I've never been a drinkin' fella
Never smoked a Panatella
But I'm a he who likes to be where all is gay
Why don't you leave your cares and troubles behind
and tell 'em your next address is where
they stay up late and drink till they're blind
Blind, but nevertheless they're glad to see you
in C-U... B-A
Why don't you travel with us on a train or a bus
to Miami, where we can begin to plan
a wonderful trip on a plane or a ship
that will take us from Florida to Havana
See you
in C-U... B-A

:hi:

28. You'll have a great time!
I've spent quite a bit of time in Havana and Santiago de Cuba, and they're both great cities. It sounds like you'll be in the countryside most of the time, but try to get to Havana and tour the old town at least. There are buildings that stretch back to the 1500s, as well as some of the best music, theatre and nightlife you'll find anywhere.

36. DUer RagingInMiami was there a while back.

He posted a lot of real good pics from his visit here on DU. They were very interesting. You might want to do a search for them. He will probably see this thread and join in with a lot of good info before too much longer. I hope you enjoy your visit. I have been wanting to go there myself for a long time.

Of course, many companies make a tidy profit getting American tourists into Cuba - usually through Mexico or whatever. But you can't go directly to Cuba.
