Dr. Laura says some women like to be raped.
Edited on Fri Jan-09-04 09:34 PM by 2dumb2beprez
The exact quote was "Some women like to be dragged up the staircase, as in 'Gone With the Wind'." She then continued to espouse the necessity for women to submit to their husband's desires. I'm a happily married man, and I wouldn't have proposed to my wife had she had been "submissive". I swear, you can't even make up what passes for Republican "family values".

Unless she broadcasts them all over the country and encourages some of the less-enlightened amongst us males to act badly.

Then I think we should all write to her employer. (EDIT: or CNN, in this case.)

11. Uh...some do
I'm certainly not trying to stir things up, so no flames please.

Listen....some women do like that(rougher treatment), not any I currently know, but I have known some who did.

Not my thing, never was, never will be so it was weird to hear that and be like "no...sorry...not my bag, see you later".

I'm in no way excusing any type of sexual harassment, but there are some women (and men) who enjoy being victimized, so you can't dismiss Dr. Laura's comments completely.

It takes all types to make this great world of ours, for the better and worse, but primarily, for the complicated.

18. Do you really mean to phrase it that way?
"There are some women (and men) who enjoy being victimized" ???

Based on my understanding of the meaning of that word, I would strongly doubt this.

Enjoying being submissive is one thing, but 'victims' ???

I really don't think that is the right word to use.

26. WTF?
No, actually, nobody likes to be _victimized_. If they enjoy it, then they're not a victim. Then they're the submissive in the act/relationship. And part of the reason why so many women "like" being dominated is because they've been taught to think that it's sexy and will get them men. I'm currently in the process of trying to deprogram myself from a lot of incredibly harmful, fucked-up sexual ideas I'm had that caused me a lot of problems (such as self-mutilation) and I can say with absolute certainty that nobody knows what women's sexuality looks like (or the sexuality of the entire human race) because we've been told by religion, by the media, by everybody but ourselves what we should enjoy. And after you hear shit like that so often, you start to believe it. In a world where women were treated exactly like men, I highly doubt so many women would enjoy being dominated.

And I fucking guarantee that NO WOMAN WANTS TO BE RAPED. There's a difference between "rough treatment"/consensual B+D and rape.

Edited on Fri Jan-09-04 11:43 PM by nothingshocksmeanymo
a bit of ROUGHNESS or DOMINATION in the SAFE space of a relationship where they perceive no REAL HARM and fucking RAPE?

It is one thing to be in a role playing relationship where there is some sense of safety and trust and play out fantasies that NO ONE would want to encounter in reality.

It is quite another to be forcefully raped.

It seems that some have trouble distinguishing.

Comments like this one are what make some men feel free to claim a woman WANTED it whether she said so or not.

36. In a word, YES!
There is a core issue here though, which transcends the primary question in the post. Such BS as is spread by people like Dr. I-have- a-Ph.D-in-Kinesiology, only serves to reinforce male hegemony, by promoting women as submissive and 'yearning' for domination of any kind, as long as it comes from men. Such idiots would not equate rape with violence, but would equate it with the 'natural order of things'. It is purely BS and nothing more, but it does indoctrinate our youth, especially young men, who then consider it their birthright.

just because a woman suffered severe childhood abuse and invites mistreatment it DOES NOT MEAN SHE LIKES IT. Understand ?????

43. But not everyone who invites mistreatment...
...does so as a result of some childhood trauma. Not all sexual tastes can be wrapped up in a neat little Freudian package. For example, some people find oral sex repulsive--so much is a matter of personal preference.

But there's obviously a difference between consensual rough-stuff and rape.

12. She also fails to make the distinction between...
...consensual submission (as in a fantay scenario), and sexual assault. I shouldn't say any more, since I didn't see this interview, but I have to wonder how someone so narrowminded and idiotic can claim the title "doctor".

I only ever heard her show once, and all I can remember is that she kept interrupting her callers, and didn't listen to a word they said. Who would call in for that kind of abuse and disrespect?

16. Ah yes, the icon of Republican Family Values
strikes again. The one and only time I ever listened to her I was on a LOOOOONG stretch of I5 (CA) and flipping through radio stations. I happened to come across some sort of talk radio and heard the caller complain that she was being beaten by her husband and asked the host what her best course of action was. The host informed her that she was married in the church (the caller had mentioned this) and that she had made a committment to God "for better or worse" and that it was up to HER to work out out her marital problems.

I almost threw my fist through the radio. She then announced "This is the Dr. Laura Show . . . "

What I'd like to know is why in HELL anyone would actually debase themselves to call into a radio station for advice from someone who does not have a degree in pshychiatry or psychology and PUBLICALLY humiliate themselves? Bush supporters, no doubt.
