There's lots of guys who are hitting a rather grizzled time of life. Rod Stewart is one example, Robert Plant another (although I've gotta admit that Plant's latest album is the blusiest, rawest stuff he's put out since LZ I and II, and the best overall effort since Pictures at Eleven). But these guys always had that "studio musician" look.

As to the coolest-looking rock musician ever, there is but one: Ed Cassidy of Spirit. BTW, he celebrated his 80th birthday last year, and is still at it.

I remember the first shot "without makeup" that came out in Creem. The link on Creem's site only shows the cover & the snark: "Put on those paper bags, guys". It was the February 1981 issue, so they didn't even have the excuse of advanced years; even Keith Richard was young once. Obviously, makeup was a wise marketing choice for Kiss.

The Ramones & many others get a pass because they apparently possessed more inner beauty than Kiss. I'm using recent exposure to the mind of Gene Simmons as my criterion.
