Winamp 5 is musical perfection.
Edited on Sun Jan-11-04 02:42 AM by DS1
The built in Internet Radio and Television functions are nothing short of amazing, streams are loaded in a flash, picture quality is outstanding for the video channels, all the skins and plugins from both Winamp 2 and 3 are compatible, the list goes on.

edited to add : plugins, geiss is important

3. 2 + 3 = 5
They took the best of each, dropped the worst of each, and you have 5 :7

4. at one time, they were contemplating a Linux version...
Do they have a Linux 5? XMMS is cool, but no new features in a long time.

I use it for Agent (a great newsreader, which works almost perfectly with wine), but I will try Winamp 5. I doubt it works out of the box. :)

21. LOL
What do you think WinAmp 5 is? It's 2.x, only tweaked. They took out all the bloatware they screwed up on when they did 3.0.

10. Holy Shit!
If you up the radio streams list to 5000, you get ~everything~

I'm listening to some tracks from Kurdistan, Kuwait, now a Native American dance.

Unbelievable.

11. I was pleasantly surprised
I've been skeptical since Winamp 3 came out. Bloated piece of garbage. I deleted it and ran 2.9.

WA 5 is terrific. It's just like the 2 series, but with more functionality.

20. Glad to hear that
I had ignored the release of 5 because of the bloat for 3.*. Will give it a shot.

13. Winamp Questions; Other Audio Software
just this week i downloaded and installed iTunes (PC User) ... seems like a great program with a pretty good, not great, selection of radio stations ..

Question: how does winamp compare ?? does winamp have an mp3 recorder built-in ?? can you provide an overview of winamp's best features ...

Several weeks ago i downloaded a brand new program called Boombox (source: www.jajsoft.com) ... it also has a built-in radio BUT its really great feature is that you can record MP3's (each in its own file) directly from streaming audio ... the product is still in beta but the record feature works great ... the radio could use a few enhancements ... it doesn't seem to update the listing of the currently playing song ...

14. To record mp3s you need to cough up 15 bucks for the full version
You can record to wav and then use another converter though. The full version does allow recording from net radio. It's the video that struck me as the kicker.

www.nullsoft.com for more info

16. FWIW
i read the doc on nullsoft's website (even read the FAQ) but couldn't find anything that said winamp can record streaming audio ... the only references to recording were for recording from a cd ...

have you ever tried to record from streaming audio? will the recorder put each song in a separate file and name the file based on the song title? these are the features i'm looking for ...

thanks for the input, DS1 !!

17. Don't have the full version so recording isn't avail
in either mode. Can't know for sure.

I already have too much music to choose from anyway, recording isn't a high priority for me.

23. Two FREE .wav to .mp3 converters, and a cheap ful-service recorder:
Edited on Sun Jan-11-04 06:00 PM by CanuckAmok
I only use WinAmp for playback. Everything else audio-related I do through these programs:

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

http://xtractor.sourceforge.net/

I use Polderbits for pretty much all my music recording. It's not freeware, but there's a 30 day unlimited trial. I ended up paying for the full version, because, among other things, it can record live audio from any source which plays through your PC speakers, and because you can save files directly to MP3Pro, which has a great sample rate. Not having to save as a .wav first is a great feature, if you're working with limited drive space.

22. Its pretty nice...
However, I don't like how you can't save the locations of audio streams in your media guide. I listen to a couple of streams that aren't in the playlist, in WA3 the streams would eventually add themselves. WA5 doesn't seem to to this. I like it, otherwise.

24. does this help ??
i just downloaded and installed winamp5 today ... so, i'm no expert ...

but i did find a way to store a radio station so that i could easily return to it without loading the full list of available stations again ...

with the radio list of stations displayed, just click and drag the station you want onto the left-side menu's "Bookmarks" ... to play the station, open the list of bookmarks, select the station and click "play" ... hope this helps ...
