Which music artists are you a big fan of?
Edited on Sun Jan-11-04 04:51 AM by mvd
We haven't done a board like this in a while, and there's a slightly different twist with the big fan designation.

I won't list all of mine - here are some:

Frank Sinatra, Rosemary Clooney, Bobby Darin...

The Beatles, Elvis, The Rolling Stones, Moody Blues, Beach Boys, Jim Croce, The Who, Janis Joplin, Peter Paul & Mary, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Simon And Garfunkel, Pete Seeger...

Fleetwood Mac, Eagles, Cheap Trick, Elton John, The Police, Abba...

The Bangles, Bon Jovi (especially less recent,) The Go Gos, The Cars, The Eurythmics/Annie Lennox, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen...

The Supremes, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson, Luther Vandross...

Kay Hanley/Letters To Cleo, U2, R.E.M., Abra Moore, Fountains Of Wayne, Sarah McLachlan, Barenaked Ladies, Pearl Jam, Loreena McKennitt, Stone Temple Pilots, The Corrs, Madonna, The Painkillers, Nina Gordon, Wilco, Goo Goo Dolls, Evan And Jaron, Aimee Mann, Sinead O'Connor, P.J. Harvey, Coldplay, Suzanne Vega, Travis, Neil Finn, Indigo Girls, Green Day, Lisa Loeb, Bree Sharp, Sixpence None The Richer, Anna Waronker, The Wallflowers, No Doubt, New Pornographers, Hole, Garbage, Jimmy Eat World, The Jayhawks, Cindy Alexander, Laura Dawn, Sheryl Crow, Jo Davidson, Radiohead, Dar Williams, Michelle Branch, Avril Lavigne, Fefe Dobson (yes, already!) Cat Power, Melissa Etheridge, Liz Phair, Tori Amos, Dido, Leona Naess, Norah Jones, David Gray, Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, Rosanne Cash, Alanis Morissette...

Patsy Cline, Merle Haggard, Jim Reeves, Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn, Conway Twitty, Charley Pride, Dixie Chicks, Patty Loveless, Kasey Chambers, Terri Clark, George Strait, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Brad Paisley, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Kim Richey, Garth Brooks, Nickel Creek, Diamond Rio, Ralph Stanley, Linda Thompson, Vince Gill, Lee Ann Womack, Sherrie Austin, Alan Jackson, Martina McBride...

En Vogue, Aaliyah (R.I.P.,) TLC (R.I.P. Left Eye), possibly Alicia Keys and Musiq

Beetoven, Mozart, Wagner...

That's not counting ones I just like including Cher and less recent Aerosmith.

ON EDIT: added Cheap Trick, Eagles, and Norah Jones because she's different. I really don't have time for more additions.

8. You mean the same music artists?
No, that's just similar taste. Whatever it is, it's a neat coincidence. :-)

30. you're right, they are
I've got one of their tracks on my hard drive. It sure doesn't mean I endorse their views. It's just a novelty to me. I would never buy one of their records. And I have a couple of tracks by Charles Manson. Doesn't mean I'm a Manson fan! :)

12. Miles...
I recently listened to some of the stuff from MILES DAVIS LIVE AT THE PLUGGED NICKEL 1965. Jesus F__K! Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams....He always wanted the strongest players. He always wanted the challenge. They used to put 'New Directions in Music by' at the top of his Columbia records. That's about right.
Best record of 2003: Thelonius Monk Live in Paris. 2 CD set. Formidable!

34. One of The Best Bands EVER!!!!
You forgot Ron Carter on bass, by the way. Every one of those guys was a monster player, they played their tails off, and somehow managed to keep from bumping into one another, 99% of the time. I've got a videotape of that band at Carnegie Hall! Amazing stuff.

29. Here's a sampling of my favorites:
Utah Phillips
Bruce Cockburn
Johnny Cash
Kris Kristofferson
U2
Steppenwolf
The Clash
Midnight Oil
Creedence Clearwater Revival
John "Cougar" Mellencamp
Faron Young
Sly and the Family Stone
Isaac Hayes

All over the map in other words. But there is a common thread running through my musical tastes: In general the artists I most admire are those who are either (1) left-wing (Bruce Cockburn, U2); (2) have an "outlaw" or heavily blue-collar orientation (Steppenwolf, Johnny Cash); or (3) both (Utah Phillips, The Clash, John Mellencamp).

32. More faves
Linda Ronstadt, Fisher, Guster, Chris Isaak, Jimmy Buffett, Roy Orbison, Carole King, Kylie Minogue, CSNY, Merril Bainbridge (not sure if she's still in music,) Mary Chapin Carpenter, Van Morrison, White Stripes, David Ball, Tammy Cochran, Gary Allan, Pink (I think Try This solidifies me as a big fan,) The Byrds, The Doors (not Byrds-level, but very good,) Kathleen Edwards, Counting Crows, Belle And Sebastian, Plumb, bleu, K's Choice

I was thinking about David Bowie, but my concern is this: I enjoy his Greatest Hits, but I'm thinking he's the type I need more full albums from in order to put him on.

35. Here's Some Bowie Suggestions
Aladin Sane
Station To Station
Low
Scary Monsters
The First Tin Machine Album
Let's Dance

That will give you a broad cross section of where's he's been. The first four are, IMO, his best overall work. The other two are just such strong diversions from his other work that i think they're required listening.
