How crappy is your town's daily newspaper?
Today I flipped through the Calgary sun and it was more apparent than ever what a piece of shit rag it is. Front page is a typical whole page photo shot, with a cheesy feel-good story, then two pages of news, then it launches right in to celebrity news. I mean, most crappy dailies at least have the decency to put the celeb stuff in the entertainment section...

1. DAILY HERALD PROPAGANDA TO THE MAX
the story about the 9 soldiers in Iraq being killed buried on page 12 or something. The headline something community related. HEAR NO EVIL SEE NO EVIL.

:puke:

2. Really crappy.

Except for the year when my daughter won the spelling bee and the front page was graced with a wonderful picture of her.

Other than that...it's yick. :hi:

3. I no longer live in CT, but I must talk about The Hartford Courant
Right-wing piece of crap, with incompetent reporters.

They're largely to blame for the mess Rowland has gotten the state into. Any hint of scandal they effectively covered up for him, and now that it's way too obvious for this RNC rag, they act all self-rightous, like, How did this happen?

4. my local paper is decent
It's the Daily Hampshire Gazette out of Northampton, MA. But I suppose in this area they'd have to look pretty hard for right-leaning journalists, so it meshes well with local opinion. :)

And, even though this area consists of a bunch of scattered college towns, they do a fair job of including stories from around the region.

My campus paper, the UMass Daily Collegian, is a different story. The editorials read like they were written by high school students -- awkward prose, and a total misunderstanding of real-world opinions and issues. A few months ago, they claimed that the 1960 election was a landslide for Kennedy.

:wow:

Obviously a load of bull, but hey, it helped make their point.

9. Knoxville News Sentinel is written in 3rd grade English
for the glory and entertainment of the far gone right. It even has a full and complete "Family and Religion" section on Sundays. Attending services here is a very social affair, the only one it seems.

11. I actually think the times is okay, here's why
They are probably the only paper that covers news from around the world in an in-depth way. I remember they even had a couple articles on the Vancouver election.

13. The Grand Rapids Puke - I mean Press
Granted, this is a Republican area, but HELLO?!?!?!?!?!

They were one of only two nwewspapers in the state to endorse Dick Posthumus (R) over Jennifer Granholm (D) in the 2002 race for Governor of Michigan, which Granholm won.

14. Richmond (VA) Times-Dispatch is a mullet wrapper.
Edited on Sun Jan-11-04 11:47 AM by Nay
It's also called the "Times-Disgrace." Almost totally RW, except for one guy (Williams) who has his head on straight.

Their biggest contributions to the RW are:

1. non-coverage of stories that are embarrassing to * and friends
2. grade-school-quality editorials aimed at the semiliterate RWs
3. Totally misleading headlines on stories, ripped from the wire,
that might put Bush in a bad light if people gave the story more
than a moment's thought.

Boy, do I miss the St. Pete Times on my doorstep every day.

18. Home of H.Ross MacKenzie and his famous question about the USS Cole
He asked something like the following two days after that horrible tragedy:

~"Was the captain of the deck distracted because she was pregnant?"

A slap at women in the military and I guess women in general. On the first page of the op/eds that day was a Brookins cartoon depicting the hole in the side of the ship and it the hole were the words "Clinton's military reainess". Even that was too much for even the loyalty RW freaks and they scrubbed it from their website.

The Times-Disgrace also is very found of front page reports "From wire services" or a mix of two or more papers' reports with only the parts that fit their agenda being included. Much like how W&Co. cherry picked intelligence to support the War on Iraq.

I stopped taking that rag a couple of years ago, there is plenty avaiable via the internet. I do feel sorry for the kids who come around trying to sell subscriptions to go to college.

15. 'Dayton Daily News' used to be a real good paper
When the war started it had a editorial that said it was against * phony oil war. Then on Thanksgiving day when people are too busy eating turkey they put out a paper that said that * occupation is justified. They also decried Kucinich's campaign as a born loser because of his positions on the war and social issues. The call in section though hopes on their asses when they do that media whore shit that I can't stand.

16. Detroit still has two daily papers
The liberal Detroit Free Press (at least six days a week). The "Freep" operates under a Reagan era "Joint operating agreement" that has them 'teaming' up with the Right Wing Rag, the Detroit News to produce the Saturday and Sunday editions. The Free Press does the Saturday edition, while the News does the Sunday edition. Not surprising, the News Editorial page also appears in the Free Press' Saturday edition. Again, not surprising, that the Free Press editorials DO NOT appear in the News' Sunday edition.

19. I live in St.Petersburg (Fl) and the St.Pete Times...
is one of the best papers I've ever read. They "tell it like it is"
every day. Naturally, a lot of RW nuts write in to the editorial section and accuse the Times of being a left-wing rag.....and that sets
off a barrage of "Left Folks" writing in and telling the RW'ers to go fuck themselves!

20. NYC.........

NY Post - Total Right Wing Garbage, though sports section is excellent and Page Six (celeb gossip, if you're into that sorta thing)

NY Daily News - Liberal, still has a few good writers like Juan Gonzalez and Stanley Crouch but it's the usual tabloid news reporting

NY Times - Allegedly Liberal, has it's good days and bad ones

NY Sun - More right wing than the Post, if that's possible....

Newsday - Originally a Long Island paper but it's had a NYC edition for many years......has writers from both the left/right......If I ever pickup a paper it's usually this one....
