What if the Red Sox never existed? Then the Babe would have played somewhere else, probably for an owner who wouldn't send him packing to the Yankees. Thus, the Yankees wouldn't be "the Yankees" as we know them today.

Besides, Boston would likely have kept the Braves without the Sox, keeping Ted Turner from getting his hands on them, and keeping us all from even more pain. Yeah, the more I think about it, eliminating the Red Sox would give the most relief to the most fans across the nation. It's THE move to make.
Think about it. There's no "Yankees." There's no Red Sox fans in constant pain. There's no annoying Atlanta Braves. Boston gets an NL team that would likely crush the Mets repeatedly, thus improving the self-esteem of all in the northeast. Milwaukee gets a team that stays, keeping that city from the pain of Bud Selig's ownership.
I love this move!

With the worst owner, Lawyer Donald Sterling. This team has only 2 winning seasons in 26 years of existence, only making the playoffs twice. I'm surprised that they get anyone in the seats, competeing with the Lakers in LA.

...Within the same City/Metro area. The Clippers have to compete directly against the Lakers from within the very same arena!!
At any rate, I really don't believe that Los Angeles needs TWO NBA franchises, especially with the long-running success of the Lakers. You could eliminate the Clippers, but I think it would be much better to deliver them to a different owner in a completely different city. Perhaps in an NBA-neglected area like Louisville, KY or Cincinnati? Cincinnati actually did have an NBA franchise at one time. The Cincinnati Royals -- better known today as the Sacramento Kings.

is that they're the team that people support who support success. When people who are clueless about football need to pick a team, they pick Man U because they've been successful and have a high profile. For those of us forced to support crappy teams by accident of birth and to suffer years of abuse at the hands of mediocre non-entities, this is bloody annoying.

no american sports franchise has embedded itself further into the american pysche.
get rid of the yanks, and a whole strange new world of sports and american iconography awaits.
no babe?
no gerhig?
no joltin' joe (or paul simon)?
the mick?
mr oct?
the yankees have been the pinnacle of american team sports over the last 100 years and their story has penetrated most deeply into america's story.
any wonder that steinbrenner goes nuts every couple of years if the yanks dont win it all?

Those players still would have played, and still would have been the legends they are today. Just for other teams. The only thing that would be lost would be a couple of dynasties. You can say that dynasties made the game what it once was, but look at the NFL. The closer it gets to total parity the hotter a commodity it is. There are no dynasties in American football, and its the most watched game in the country. (well, dynasties are so rare in the league that winning 3 championships in a 10 year period is considered a dynasty)

There's such a thing as team chemistry that brings out the best in some players. Would Maris have hit 61 without the Mick on his tail most of the season? Would Reggie have been Mr. October if he had been playing for a team whose season ended in September?
There are obviously a lot of Red Sox fans on this thread!

|
ruth, gerhig dimaggio and mantle would not have been as famous if they had played for the washington senators and they would not have become the cultural icons they became otherwise.
for the yanks, there was a direct line from ruth to mantle that spanned from the early '20's to late '60's and that franchise was america's in that time. remove it and the largest hole in sports culture and history occurs.
only the celtics with auerbach and russell in the late 50's to mid '60's comes close....(and perhaps the montreal candians over the same span).

I never got the impression they are over-rated, since I never seem to really hear much about them. 'Course, I'm in NY, and I don't watch sports or listen to the TV, so it kinda stands to reason that I'd hear mostly about east coast teams, but still - seems that other football franchises get far more publicity than the Pack. But as I said, I have little real contact with the media, especially the sports media, so I could be - and probably am - entirely wrong.

How can anybody hate the Washington Redskins? God's team on earth!
Now the Cowboys, the Eagles -- these are dirty, worthless teams worth hating.
But the Redskins are the embodiment of all that is good on earth. They carry with them the smile of every child. They perform miracles - I saw Art Monk lay hands on Joe Theisman's leg and heal him. Then He said unto him, "Go forth and beat Dallas."

91. Okay then, how about erasing a sports owner |
|
I'll start with Dan Snyder.
Then Jerry Jones, then George Steinbrenner, then the Bidwill family, then former North Stars owner Norm Green, then Bud selig, then...
Hmmm... sounds like a good idea for a thread. Okay, I'll be back...

By far...the only team I am glad to see lose to the Cowboys. The most obnoxious sports franchise ever!!!
I'm glad to see Joe Gibbs back though. It's been too easy hating the Skins lately...like Shooting fish in a barrel. Now there will be far more satisfaction in seeing them lose. Skins fans won't be able to blame it on the coach.

89. I kind of liked the XFL. The running for possesion to begin the |
|
game. I don't think they needed all the girls in short skirts, but my husband and I found it fun to watch. A nice switchup. Better than the USFL, which was horrid.

78. I agree. On top of that, they named their stadium The Pond. |
|
It is all too cornball. They can have Federov, the Wings seem to be doing just fine without him. He was overrated and it always bugged me that people looked the other way when her was involved with Anna Kournikova, who was a teenager at the time.

|
Who would all you morans spend your time hating? Those two teams, like 'em or not, have given us some of the most watchable highlights in the history of sports.
Personally, I'd get rid of a team that hasn't provided any great sports moments. Like maybe the Sabres...

86. I'm a Red Sox Fan, But Don't Agree That The Yankees Should Be Erased |
|
They are a dynasty that have contributed a lot to baseball: Joe DiMaggio, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle, and a whole slew of baseball history in the '30s, '40s, and '50s. As much as I have animosity toward them during the regular season, I can't deny their contribution to baseball.
On the other hand, I hated the Detroit Pistons in the '80s when they played my Celtics...there's a team I could have done without, along with the Lakers!

92. On an intellectual level I agree with the Yankees thing, but... |
|
...without the Lakers where would the Celtics have been? Without quality opposition we wouldn't have has the high level of basketball that we did in the eighties. I know they only met three times but for most of that decade the regular season seemed like just a formality, a long wait until we could get down to the real business of watching the Lakers and Celtics. Great, great stuff.

Not that I really care about any football team one way or another, I'm just tired of my tax dollars subsidizing a bunch of millionaires playing a game.
The more they win, the more tax money they're likely to to fleece out of the city.

101. Consider yourself lucky- |
|
here in Chicago, the taxpayers were forced to hand over $700 billion and desecrate a war memorial to allow our football team(and a shitty one at that) to have a new stadium to make money off of. and the stadium isn't even domed, so it's not like it's going to be useful most of the year, or be able to draw some really big convention events... we was robbed, by Dum-Dum Daley, the Democrat Dictator and it's one of the reasons I want to leave this cow-town on the lake.

Talk about a waste of fucking space, this franchise has nothing but criminals and pot heads, guys who don't give a damn about the fans, their favorite line is "cut the check". Their 'star', Rasheed Wallace, told us point blank that he doesn't give a damn what anybody thinks, he's gonna do what he wants to do.
I call them the Jail Gangstas 'cuz so many of them are on probation.
