7. I just learned Canasta over Christmas
I came second the first game and WON the second game we played (4 or us). My wife's family loves playing it and I have to say it is very interesting but I play it like the games I had played before, try to go out quick and leave them holding points. I may learn to play the more traditional way but I just get nervous holding that many cards.

12. Pinochle: The favorite game of Republic.
We go and play pinochle every week in the back room of the local bar, where the smoke isn't so bad. There are a couple of generations who've played since they were young, since TV and radio were late getting here, and local get togethers always had pinochle players. We play single deck pinochle, with 3 to 5 tables every week, and rotating partners. Play is 6 full games, at 4 hands per game, and everyone keeps their own score, and lists their partner for each game. We all put $3 in the kitty to get in, and the top three players get money back, along with the final two pinochle holders(always a partnership). Since we do chocolates, we provide some candies for the low score.
It's a good way to interact with the movers and shakers of this county, as a present County Commissioner and a past County Commissioner play.
Lots of fun!
:hi:

13. Spite & Malice
I was taught this game by a nice elderly woman who played it with uncharacteristic ruthlessness. A very fun game that requires at least two decks that are visibly different when the cards are face down.

32. Euchre.
Euchre's my game, through and through. I can't count the times I skipped class to play Euchre in the Beloit College cafeteria. We had a whole set of rituals around the game, too.

Love that game; haven't played it in years. When I was in college, we had a whist game going around the clock. Sometimes kids would skip a class because they finally had a seat at the table.

25. Canasta -- in Brazil it's called "Buraco" (hole).
Edited on Mon Jan-12-04 08:58 AM by JCCyC
But the canastas themselves are called CanastRas. Lots of variations here, but mainly the aces and deuces are worth only 15 points instead of 20. And there are no top-card restrictions of taking from the discard pile. And red threes aren't special, etc.

Buraco rules seem to be a lot more simple than what I found here: http://www.pagat.com/rummy/canasta.html

Edit: typo

I bought my sister a deck for christmas so that I could take the other deck to college.

With a regular deck: war, Gin, and 500. Apparently the version of 500 that my friend taught a bunch of us is only played in certain parts of St. Paul, its even called the West End version, which is the part of town I live in.
