I have recently met two of the 30%
1) I was up late browsing and ended up chatting with a 24 year old male. He said to me that he thought bush was a wonderful president and I asked him why and he said .... "cuz he has a wonderful foreign policy".

2) One of the doctors I work with is the nicest person you could meet. He is very religious but isn't in your face with it, but you can tell he tries to live a Christian life.

These are parts of conversations I have had with him (and it is un-nerving to me).

a) There was a case where he dictated a canned prostate diagnosis and it was for a female. I asked him about it and it got cleared up but I made a crack about maybe the person was Ann Colter. He laughed and said no, you don't think she is a man. Then he said he liked her and thought she had interesting things to say. And yes, he does listen to Rush Limbaugh.

b) Ronald Reagan was (and still his) his hero growing up.

c) Today, he referred himself like Bob Dole does. I asked him if he thought he was Bob Dole and he laughed and said you can compare me to Bob Dole but don't compare me to Gore. I asked why not and he said cuz Gore is crazy. He said it about three times and laughed.

How can he be so smart and kind and gentle, yet be so ignorant and so full of hate in this area?

3. That's a good question, Koopie.
It's scary when you follow through that logic because it makes you question yourself and your beleifs about some things - not politics; humanity! And what it means to be human; and moral.
At least, sometimes it makes me do that.
I have a good friend who is Wiccan and part of the 30%. I don't get that either.

7. My Next Door Neighbors............
.........are ardent conservatives. He's a cop, she's a nurse, and they are two of the nicest people you'd ever want to meet. I figure that since I have to live next door to them, it isn't worth alienating them by ridiculing their politics. They know that I am both a progressive and gay and it doesn't seem to bother them a bit. We just don't discuss politics when we speak to one another.

8. My financial guy is also a Bush* supporter and I also just don't get it.
He's a very smart guy and has done well for me, and does taxes and favors for elderly people, so is a compassionate person. He's also become a friend and has advised me very well, since I lost my job. So I just don't understand why he supports Bush*, either. He's also a dittohead, to add insult to injury... When I ask him about the economy, he just says that it's "coming back," and he follows this closely. I have sometimes wished that I could bring a few friends from DU to see him with me, since I can't seem to persuade him on my own... And I'm not uninformed. He has a teen-age son who is the light of his life, intelligent and athletic, and I've often thought that if the draft was reinstated, as it might be, this might change his mind, but I wouldn't wish this on him, or anyone. I don't get this, either...
