1. Almost as bad: no one stepped in.
Edited on Sat Mar-24-07 09:56 AM by GaYellowDawg
Say what you will about the South, in Georgia, that bastard wouldn't have thrown more than two punches before getting his ass kicked by everyone else.

On edit: Sorry, that comment was inappropriate. I think that just about anywhere except in that particular bar on that particular night, someone would have intervened sooner. If I as a Southerner don't like regional prejudice I shouldn't foster it. Apologies esp. to Chicagoans.

2. i hear ya, but i wouldn't reduce it to a regional thing
the bar didn't look very occupied (maybe two other people), i imagine the outcome would have been different if the place was packed.

15. I'm from Georgia too
I think your right, If a man hits a woman in front of people in this town, he will leave on a stretcher. The ambulance driver better mind his p's and q's as well. People go in to bars around here ready for anything. Hitting women doesn't sit well with many here. No offense meant to anyone or any place.

4. Well I was channel surfing yesterday and saw on Court TV that
the cop was a regular at the bar and that other regulars knew of his occupation. How many people are willing to fight a 250 pound man who is carrying a badge and a gun? It seems to me like that asshole could have done the same things in any number of places.

That poor woman is very fortunate that this was caught on tape, because the obvious proof and national attention that it provides will go along way from protecting her from intimidation as she tries to prosecute. Without that I could certainly see her getting roughed up or maybe some drugs being conveniently found in her car.

I hope that asshole goes to prison!

11. Also wondering if this was a "cop bar"
e.g., a bar that's primarily, or at least heavily, patronized by LE. Has there been any info on whether the bystanders were also off-duty police?

13. exactly.
Concern for a woman you don't know only goes so far when you're talking about a cop who could beat or shoot you without consequence.

14. There are other ways of stopping a fight besides fighting the cop
Edited on Sat Mar-24-07 01:26 PM by Poiuyt
It may not work, but someone could at least have tried to talk the guy down, telling him to chill out, calm down, whatever. I think I would at least have tried that. Of course, I don't know the circumstances of what was going on in there.

17. She refused to serve him any more alcohol...

<snip>
CHICAGO – A Chicago police officer charged with beating a female bartender in an altercation caught on camera has been put on leave pending an internal investigation, authorities said Wednesday.

Anthony Abbate, 38, was expected to be fired after the investigation into the Feb. 19 attack on the bartender, allegedly after she refused to continue serving alcohol to the 12-year police veteran, Chicago Police Department spokeswoman Monique Bond said.

A surveillance video from Jessie’s Short Stop Inn Tavern on Chicago’s northwest side shows an off-duty Abbate shouting at the bartender before walking behind the bar, where he punched, kicked, and threw her to the ground.

The 115-pound woman suffered bruises to her head, neck, back and lower body after the attack by the 250-pound officer, the woman’s attorney, Terry Ekl, told WFLD-TV, which first reported the attack.

24. I noticed that, too!
She popped right up and walked away when somebody finally intervened at the end. Must be embarrassing for the cop right now. Not only does the world now know he beats up women, but they know that he fought with all he had against a female opponent less than half his size, and she still popped right back up!

Even though if a tiny unarmed woman stole your stuff, he might be willing to help.

16. Looks fake
And obviously not particularly 'savage' since she's not only actively repelling his blows, but when he's done she easily and quickly gets up looking none the worse for wear as if nothing happened.

18. Eh, that's savage behavior. "She can still get up.. none the worse for wear"
Are these really even considerations in an instance of aggravated assault?

20. Are you serious? It's definitely not fake, and adrenaline can do funny things to
an injured person. You get up and try to protect yourself because of survival instinct. You don't feel the concussion or broken ribs until after the danger has past.

He was also very intoxicated, so his balance and precisioin were probably a bit off, which worked to her advantage.
