Favorite song/dance scene from a movie musical
Edited on Sun Jan-11-04 11:24 PM by BurtWorm
My current favorite: "Prehistoric Man" from "On the Town," in which Ann Miller sings the praises of primitivism, inspired by Jules Munshin's resemblence to "pithecanthropis erectus." Besides being very cleverly filmed, it has some of the most ecstatic tap dancing in movies.

What's yours?

4. can't recall which movie it's from, but there's a scene . . .
in which Fred Astaire dances up and down walls and across the ceiling . . . never did figure out how they did that . . . the other one that sticks with me one where the Nicholas Brothers (I think that's their name) were dancing on a staircase, and they ended up leapfrogging over each other down the stairs, landing on each one doing a split . . . that had to hurt! . . .

9. Pennies From Heaven
The scene where Christopher Walken does the tap dance on the piano always blows me away. It's just the sheer surprise of it, but I did find out recently that he started in show biz as a song and dance man.

Same movie: I also love the scene where Bernadette Peters and Steve Martin are duplicating Fred and Ginger's screen dance scene.

11. Shake a Tailfeather - The Blues Brothers
Hey, In my book, it's a musical.

What makes it all the cooler is that all the dancers were amateurs. The only pro dancer used in the film were for The Old Landmark, which BTW, seems to be the inspiration for the series of adverts for Nike basketball shoes.

17. Two from "The Sound of Music", and "Blame Canada"
Liesel and her soon-to-be Nazi boyfriend dancing in the pavilion during a rainstorm to "You are 16".

Maria and Captain von Trapp singing "I must have done something good".

I also think that South Park's "Blame Canada" is great.

26. Great choice! How about, "We're A Couple of Swells?"
I think from "Easter Parade." Anyway, Fred and Judy, and great warmth and comedy. Gotta give it up for Shirley and Bill "Bojangles" Robinson in "The Littlest Colonel," too, as well as all the other great choices here (Fred and Ginger - Fabulous). Geez, no wonder I like "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy." Anyway, your choice is excellent, too.

28. Donald O'Conner, in 'Singin' in the Rain', the 'Make 'em laugh'
scene. The man was incredible, and really funny. I went to school with his daughter Donna at about that time, & he really was that crazy.

Also, for a duplicate dance of an old icon, Gregory Hines in "Bojangles" duplicating Robinson's staircase dance.

38. "Sign" from "Annie"
If I'm not mistaken, the scene/song was not in the Broadway show, having been written specifically for Carol Burnett & Albert Finney. It's fabulous.
