Why did the Packers have that long period of sucking so much? |

I've really only gotten back into the Packers, and even paying attention to their wins, after Holmgren arrived, though living in WI all my life before then, of course the Pack was inescapable.
I know we had the glory days of Vince, greatest coach who has ever walked the Earth.
But that was kinda before my time as a human being, so I have no memory of that period.
I do remember, though, growing up, my Dad and Mom often disgusted with Packer performance. I mean, it was what, 30 years between superbowl appearances? And I remember that when I was kid Bart Starr was coaching, and to hear my Dad make, uh, comments at the TV, I can only assume that Starr must have been a real POS as a coach (though a miracle as a quarterback).
But I don't think Starr was the only coach between Vince and Holmgren. And I don't know anything else.
What was the problem with the Packers? Not enough money to hire decent players? Series of just plain awful coaches? Drug problems? Training regimen that consisted only of running around with kegs of beer on their backs until they were emptied while eating brats with all the fixings?
Or was it that they were never actually sucky, but that they just couldn't manage to win in the playoffs?
I'm quite curious. I'd like to know about my home team. And I know we have some serious football people here who will know these answers, and more. Thanks in advance.

1. You name it, and it went wrong. |

Lots of bad hiring decisions in regard to coaching added to poor personnel decisions led to two decades plus of misery. Hey, I was born a month before Super Bowl II. That misery was all I ever knew until Holmgren hit town.
All I know is that I'm glad I'm not in the boat that my friends from Detroit remain in. I now feel quite lucky to root for a team that is consistently competitive.

2. Wow - I was born right before Super Bowl One |
|
I always know what superbowl is playing because it's my age!
So we're close in age, and your Huck, and I'm Mark Twain. How odd!
(although now that I think of the math, maybe I was born a year before Super Bowl I, since I must have been 1 for the first one)
