ooooo I REALLY just pissed off a born-again Fundie!
saw today's paper on my desk with the headline: "Catholics urged to fight gay marriage" (Boston Globe)

he reads the headline outloud and says, "why should they have to fight it? if everyone would just read the bible, they would know its a sin and there wouldn't be an issue!" :eyes:

Me: "your born again right Dwayne?"

He: "as god is my witness." :eyes:

Me: "drugs or alcohol?"

He: "what do you mean?"

Me: "what made you born-again? drugs or alcohol?"

He: walks away and mutters "Pagan" under his breath.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

13. They twist it to say what they want it to.
Even when it's pointed out that it says nothing about gay marriage, they insist that this piece here and that piece over there plus Jesus' teaching on divorce (?) mean "no gay marriage."

Bunch of lily-livered group-think no-balls whiney butts.

5. There has to be a reason
for someone to want to be born again. Once was enough for me.

Not that I don't support someone's right to participate in any creed that may
add stability to an otherwise troubled life, and yet....
There are times I am convinced that its all about angel food cake.

ALSO
Can there not be a parallel between organized religion and organized crime?

GOOD FOR YOU !!

24. My favorite response
I frequently deal with born-agains telling me that I need to be born-again also. My favorite response is, "Why? I think my mother got it right the first time!"

9. GUDJOB!
9 of 11 houses on my block are fundies (the other 1 is just a good ol' confederate) & I fly the UN flag every fair day.

They visibly react when they drive by.

Can't help it, love to watch them enrage themselves.

18. congratulations on offending someone with no anchor
for their belief...and for being yet another DUer who can't seem to help but slam religious belief. Suggesting that someone's beliefs are 'induced' is no way to begin a dialog. If all you hope to do is alienate and drive away (department of redundancy department) Christians by ideologically and spiritually kicking their collective ass (which can be easy to do when someone has not really taken the time to examine WHY they believe what they do) then this is certainly the way to go about it. You want to actually change some things, perhaps confronting them on a logical basis rather than a name-calling basis might be more prudent. But, then again, maybe all you wanted to do was piss him off and forever guarantee that he will not come to view your ideas with the respect they probably deserve.

Oh well...

21. I agree with matcom on this one
The guy's own behavior condemned him. He wasn't having a conversation around the water cooler, he launched into his own condemnation right out of the blue-- in a manner guaranteed to offend. His attitude says that he's not capable of entertaining any other perspective on this subject.

There was a thread over the weekend, somebody was in an auto repair shop, and the other guy in the waiting room started to tell a joke that involved the word "nigger." And the DUer involved put him in his place right away. I think that's perfectly appropriate. There should be social consequences for expressing boorish prejudices in polite company.

Now if the topic had come up in the context of a real conversation-- say, Matcom and his co-workers are sitting around the cafeteria together, discussing the Patriots game or something, and somewhere in there this guy says "Don't you think that approving gay marriage will so offend Our Lord that we'll never win a playoff game again?" Then there's a context for an actual discussion: "Gee, Gomer, why do you think so? Is it because of that silly little verse in Leviticus, on the same page as the prohibition against shellfish-- and say, is that a lobster roll you're eating?"

There's a notion I've been thinking about a lot lately. One of the ways we're told that Jesus was great, it shows up in all the Gospels, is that he kissed the leper-- he very publicly and openly exchanged precious bodily fluids with the most despised character in town. This act was a humongous inspiration to some of the greatest Christians in history; Francis of Assisi comes to mind. Now, we tend not to have actual lepers in our cities nowadays, but we do have classes of people we're taught to despise, like, er, I dunno, maybe GAYS-- and it seems to me in my naivete that the Christian thing to do would be to embrace them (which you can do without lying with them, ya know).

But apparently this is what makes saints different from the rest of us: they have the cojones to actually implement Christlike behavior.

22. on the calling out, I am all with you
I just have a problem with the manner in which it was done. Many Christians have no idea why they believe what they believe. They were spoon fed it from birth and just accept it as 'gospel,' for lack of a better word :-) . And when people have no sense of why they have a belief, well, to attack it with snide remarks gives them no opportunity for discussion. Matcom, was right to call him on the carpet for his comment...I just wish he had asked, "Why do you say that? Where is that in the bible?" If people would start a true discussion, rather than using flippant and rude remarks (while they may be funny) there might be an opportunity there.

I am a Christian male. I debate these issues with non-christians all the time and I love doing it. Gives me reason to really look into what I THINK I believe and creates a good flow of information in the conversation. But, when someone just attacks with name calling or other less than polite assertions, most people become defensive and someone like the other soul in matcom's conversation who apparently has no real understanding of his reason for faith is just going to shut down...which of course sounds like matcom's goal in this instance.

Yes, Jesus did some truly outrageous things in his time. And while he ridiculed the Pharisees, he did it on reason. He was a wonderful teacher and if people were willing to look past their own prejudices and listen to what he had to say (and he gave them every opportunity) they would have learned a lot...like this gentleman could have done if given the chance.

We could all embrace people like this guy. He doesn't know why he believes what he says. He just needs to know why...or at least look into exploring...

Thanks for the well thought out and well written post...
Good Morning to all!
TheProdigal

PS : and yes, I know you can embrace them without lying with them! :-)

23. i have intelligently debated many
and swayed many more (my own father being the most high profile).

this was completely different. this guy walked in the door and, upon seeing the story headline, (remember he chose to read it aloud), decided to 'engage' me with a remark he knew would set me off. there was no debate to engage here. Squeech is correct. this was not a jumping point to rationally 'debate' the issue at hand. rather this was an attempt on his part to slander an entire class of people using his (found, refound, newfound) beliefs.

had he not jumped off with the "its a sin" blanket claim, i might have approached it differently.

as it was, it was early in the morning and i chose to slap him where i thought it would hurt the most. with a knife-edged (perhaps childish) remark that would hit him at the very core of his being, at the same time letting him know that i wasn't interested in his proselytizing, bigoted remarks.

oh yeah, i hadn't had coffee yet :)

25. yeah, that caffeine makes all the difference!

I am enjoying a cup of high-test right now. Ok, I will take my medicine, I broke into a rant on a topic that I did not have all the information on and in doing so showed my more mushy, whimpy side. A thousand pardons...

Well, at least now you have a target to engage in future discussions. I find it fun to challenge people on their claims of deep understanding and enlightenment gained through their vast knowledge of scripture...and frankly, enjoy having mine tested as well. I lead a small group of men in just such a venture where, weekly, we get together and hash out some of the more 'troubling' issues that we come up with in the Canon.

Hope your day is (or has been) a good one...mine is just about to really get started!
