felonious thunk's weekend dvd review |
|
Along with mrs. thunk, here are some comments about the 3 dvds we attempted to watch this weekend.
"Bruce Almighty" - This is preachy, awful crap. Remember when Jim Carrey was funny and didn't try to be a 'good actor'? I have to pee; no don't bother pausing it. The only way to redeem this crap is to have all of them die horribly at the end. God just said he doesn't know the answer to something; how is that possible? Movie stopped at 52 minutes.
"American Wedding" - This is just plain sad. The first one, kind of funny; the second one, way less funny; this one, just pathetic. Can they reach any more? I'm embarrassed for whoever wrote this. Why Eugene? Why? Movie stopped at 39 minutes.
"Anything Else" - Wow, I'm glad we had that Blockbuster gift card, and didn't actually pay for this. I'm sorry honey, Woody Allen used to be kind of funny. The only way to redeem this crap is to have all of them die horribly at the end. Movie stopped at 45 minutes.

2. Well, Thunk, We Must Think Alike |
|
Of course, given the nature of these three films, i had no desire to see any of them
Allen hasn't done anything worth watching since Zelig, Carey has always been horrible, and i couldn't have any less interest in watching American Wedding.
Nice to see that these are as bad as i expected them to be. Now, i don't have to waste my time confirming my suspicions when they come on cable. The Professor

4. We were in the mood for mindless fun movies |
|
Hoping for a Dumb and Dumber type of, yeah, it's really stupid, but I'm laughing anyway. Well, we didn't laugh, and all 3 were so mindless, it was uncomfortable watching them.
We got a blockbuster gift card for the holidays, and otherwsise wouldn't have rented crap like this, but didn't feel like drama over the weekend. We wanted funny. Sadly, there seem to be fewer and fewer smart comedies, and failing that, comedies that just make you laugh.

Gotta be in the mood for drama. When i want fun i want funny or stuff blowing up. One of the two. And you're also right about the comedy thing. There is a dearth of smart ones. And those that attempt it are too self-aware of their "smartness" (for lack of a better term.) The Professor

5. Why ARE movies so bad these days??? |
|
They're not worth the 9 dollars to see them on opening weekend. They're not worth the 5 dollars to see them at a 'second-run' house. They're not worth the 2 dollars to rent them...The last film that really grabbed me was MEMENTO. And then the guy who directed it got a big-budget payoff film INSOMNIA and it stunk. I loved Soderburg's THE LIMEY and then he made that after-school special TRAFFIC...I don't get it...The artistry seems to be gone from film...

I know exactly what you mean about movies being bad. Just try to stay away from the bid budget pictures and focus on independent or foreign films. There's a ton of stuff out there if you can find it. Just keep looking at Yahoo Movies, Rotten Tomatoes, or other sites that tally lots of reviews.
Your profile doesn't say where you live, but if you saw Memento, you must be able to catch some alternate choices. Some have even gone mainstream, like Lost in Translation. Some you may have to hunt for, like "Following", Chistopher Nolan's earlier work that's just as good as Memento.
Some of the ones I've really enjoyed over the last few years have been Adaptation, Spirited Away, Ghost World, Nine Queens, Dirty Pretty Things, The Emperor and the Assassin, and Mulholland Drive.

The name is a play on Thelonious Monk! For not knowing that, you will wear the letter B on your forehead for "Blasphemer!" You will pay the appropriate homage to the High Priest of Bop!
I am mortified, sasquatch. Mortified, i tell ya! The Professor
